BIG 12 - 2 (uhh 3 ?) is not where we want to be

Postby HB Pony Dad » Fri Sep 23, 2011 11:26 am

I can not believe that these clowns don't even agree on what just occurred ...

To hear Boren tell it, the nine remaining schools have agreed in principle to grant their first- and second-tier media rights to the Big 12 for the next six years. Boren's tone made it seem as if nine signatures will finalize the deal and the league can enjoy near-ironclad security through its next media rights negotiation. (What does it means to grant first- and second-tier rights? Basically, a school turns over the rights to its best football and basketball games to the conference. This effectively renders the schools worthless to any other conferences. If, say, Missouri wanted to go to the SEC, the Tigers could leave, but the Big 12 would get all of Missouri's TV money for the length of the deal. The Big Ten and Pac-12 have similar agreements to remove any incentive to conference-hop.) Deaton did not go nearly as far as Boren. He said the nine CEOs had agreed to discuss such a move, but he said they had not agreed upon it yet. Deaton also refused to commit to keeping Missouri -- which flirted with the SEC in recent weeks -- in the conference long-term. Asked Thursday if the Tigers could leave if the Big 12 couldn't work out its issues, Deaton told reporters, "That's a hypothetical that could occur."

The security of the Big 12 boils down to this: If the schools sign that grant of rights deal, the league will stay together for at least as long as the deal is in place. If the schools don't sign that deal, we'll all be watching Realignmentpalooza again this time next year.

If the deal gets signed, the Big 12 will be able to lure either one or three more schools to join. If the deal doesn't get signed, it might be hard to find a decent school that wants to join a group that has created such a toxic atmosphere in recent years.

Even when Big 12 comes together, it cannot keep its story straight

I'd be careful if I were Missouri because OU could punk them by saying -you know what I think maybe I need to go call the SEC.

SEC would take OSU. That gets them to 16.

Texas and OU both have a chance to dump the dingleberries clinging to them. Now that everyone has agreed to stay in big 12, Texas or OU leaving could say that tech/OSU have a solid BCS conference to land in so it would hurt to leave them.

Smell that acid smell of burning rubber? That is UT's political and brand capital burning. It is past time they played ball with their partners. Even their alumns are tired of this.

I'd join any current autobid conference that invites us to join. Why? Because, then we're in the club and we have to be removed from the club which as you can see with Baylor is hard to do.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I just do not believe that the whorens are going to give up their TV rights to their games, especially after all the work they have done to create the LHN.

Dodds seems clear they don't want to sign over rights....

http://www.newtondailynews.com/articles ... /index.xml
Among the Thursday proposals, the granting of media rights to the Big 12 in regard to ABC/ESPN and Fox Sports contracts figures to be the primary sticking point. Essentially, such a move means that a school would assign its primary TV rights to the conference for six years.

If that school departs within those six years, its TV rights would remain with the Big 12, making that school unavailable for telecasts in its new league.

Other leagues, notably the Pac-12 and Big Ten, have such agreements. Pac-12 members signed away their primary TV rights through 2024.

In a Wednesday conference call, Texas men’s athletic director DeLoss Dodds made it clear that UT had no intention of agreeing to such a move.

“We don’t want to sign over our rights to the Big 12. We want to keep all our rights,” Dodds said.

So- the battles continue. The b12-3 may blow-up after all. Do you think all of the other schools are going to give up their rights and lets the whorens keep theirs? NO way Jose.

Never mind.....

Talk about it in Inside the 40 Acres
A source close to the situation told Orangebloods.com that Texas will agree to "grant rights" on Tier 1 and Tier 2 television agreements involving the Big 12 for the next six years.

The Longhorns are ready to make tier 1 and tier 2 concessions that haven't previously been in play.
This is a major concession for Texas, which has opposed the granting of rights on Tier 1 and Tier 2 television agreements since the inception of the Big 12 16 years ago. This shows how serious Texas is about keeping the Big 12 together, the source said.

The granting of rights means that the Big 12 owns the rights to televise the majority of Texas football and basketball games over the next six years. Texas would retain its rights at the Tier 3 level, where the Longhorn network operates.

Industry sources have said the reason the Big 12 has been vulnerable to breaking up in the past is because without the granting of rights, every school is essentially a free agent. But when a school turns over its rights to a conference the way the nine remaining schools in the Big 12 have verbally agreed to do, that conference controls a school's television rights at the Tier 1 and Tier 2 level, even if a school was to leave the Big 12.

In other words, if Texas joined the Pac-12 or any other conference over the next six years, the Big 12 would still control the rights to air Texas games, even in the other conference.

My take: This is the show of solidarity that the rest of the conference was waiting for to ensure an iron-clad commitment to hold the conference together. In the past, schools have agreed to certain forms of revenue sharing at the Tier 1 and Tier 2 level but have never turned over their rights to the conference. This should ensure the Big 12 is here to stay, for at least six years.
