Rough weekend for the schools mentioned as prime candidates for Big 12 expansion. Starting with TCU.
The Horned Frogs lost to SMU 40-33 in overtime. Just great. Now we’ll hear about how the Mustangs should be admitted to the Big 12.
Louisville also went down, 17-13 to Marshall. Rough Saturday for all Cardinals – Louisville, Ball State, the Redbirds of St. Louis.
And even Brigham Young was not stellar, despite winning. BYU beat Utah State 27-24 after trailing most of the game, but BYU still can’t seem to find solid footing under Bronco Mendenhall. I know, I know. BYU has won a bunch of games in the 2000s. But BYU hasn’t won the Mountain West since 2007 and won’t win it this year, since the Cougars have gone independent.
Some other Big 12 candidates won big. West Virginia routed Bowling Green 55-10. Cincinnati beat arch-rival Miami-Ohio 27-0. Boise State waxed Nevada 30-10. And Air Force beat Navy 35-34 in overtime.
You can’t go admitting schools to conferences based on one game, which hopefully will stem much talk of SMU. TCU clearly is the best candidate for admission. The Frogs won the Rose Bowl last year, they’ve been to two straight BCS bowls and they’re spending mover than $100 million on stadium renovation. TCU’s success is built over a full decade of improvement.
SMU was in the doldrums for 20 years until June Jones came over from Hawaii for the 2008 season. He’s done a nice job, but SMU plays in a tiny stadium with little fan base and no national brand.
But give the Mustangs credit. When their athletic department needed a victory the most, SMU produced.
