Which is a more Stable Conference? Big East or Big 12...

Postby ponyscott » Tue Oct 04, 2011 8:47 am

I thought this article deserved its own thread...good points to ponder as the Big 12 is a constantly moving 'fault line' that is destined to be a disaster soon. Should Louisville make the move if offered or not?

As I posted elsewhere:

This is an interesting read and clearly points out that the Big 12 is far from stable or a better landing spot...

The money will likely be just as good in the Big East. Currently, the Big East has two contracts with ESPN (one for men’s and women’s basketball through the 2011-2012 school year and one for football through the 2012-2013 school year) and one with CBS for men’s and women’s basketball through 2012-2013.

Earlier this year the Big East turned down a deal estimated to be worth up to $130 million a year from ESPN. It was unclear if this offer was only for first-tier rights or if it included second-tier rights similar to the deal ESPN made the ACC. CBS has been a television partner with Big East basketball since the 1981-1982 season, so it’s hard to believe they wouldn’t continue the relationship.

The Big 12 is far less stable.

It is 100% dependent on one school, a school which refuses to make any real commitment to the long term future of the league. Texas may decide, year after year, it is in their interest to stay in the Big 12, but when they refuse to make a commitment longer than 5 or 6 years, no one in their right mind would stay there if they have another option.

And unless the Big East completely implodes, there is no way any of those schools defect to the Big 12.

Another interesting read from The Sporting News about the BE...

Big East turned out OK in '03, can survive this time, too]

A source close to the Big East told Sporting News that Louisville, known to be strongly committed to the conference even though it may have better options than any other member, pushed Rutgers' and UConn’s representatives to be more committed to the conference’s future.

Louisville recognizes what the others have refused to see: that no one in the league—and no one departing, for that matter—has a better athletic future in any other league. The Big East association works for every football-playing member, and it works for the BCS because the league covers a large chunk of the nation’s population at a minimal cost—one measly bid to the least consequential major bowl.

When the ACC last raided the Big East for members, in 2003, many presumed the league could not possibly hold onto its BCS status. However, the remaining members held firm and rebuilt the league into something that actually created envy among some outsiders.

If the Longhorn Network covers high school games and/or shows highlights, IMHO, that crosses the line with respect to NCAA rules regarding recruit contact (would it be fair, for example, if a big orange satellite truck disgorged a swarm of orange clad reporters and camera men every Friday at blue chip recruit's high school games?)

That being said, the news that the Big XII will begin equitable sharing of TV revenue should stabilize the Big XII and allow its other attributes (like history, traditional rivalries, geographic proximity, and in my view, an equal or better football conference than the SEC) to be the more salient considerations for current and prospective members deciding which conference they want to be a part of.
