San Diego State has told representatives of the Big 12 Conference that it is interested in joining that league if the Big 12 wants to continue adding new members. Athletic Director Jim Sterk said he has passed information about SDSU and its television market to several Big 12 officials, including interim commissioner Chuck Neinas and Big 12 athletic directors.

So far, the Big 12 has indicated to Sterk that it was “looking more east than west and staying in their footprint right now.†But Sterk said Big 12 officials also told him SDSU’s package was “good powerful information, well put together and that they would look at it as their realignment committee developed.â€

We’ve been proactive as far as getting information out and just making sure their folks know what a valuable commodity San Diego State is,†Sterk said. “We’ve been able to show how well we capture the San Diego television market in the last couple of years and have a program that’s really on the rise and have a lot of things going for it. We’re a member of the Mountain West Conference, and we think it’s a very good conference. But if things realign, you never know how the sands are moving.â€

It might not matter, but Neinas had a previous relationship with SDSU. In 2005-06, SDSU paid him more than $65,000 to help conduct executive searches that ended with the hiring of football coach Chuck Long and previous Athletic Director Jeff Schemmel.
