NCAA Discusses Cutting Scholarships...
in exchange for full costs of living scholarships for Student/athletes. I doubt BCS schools go for it because it spreads the competitive balance even more. I'm a definite yes-schools have plenty of players right now-but they are considered expendable right now-force schools to develop the players they sign.

Re: NCAA Discusses Cutting Scholarships...
I share the interest in reducing the number of scholarship, but would be concerned if the rule was approved in order to permit increasing benefits/paying players. The finanical and legal implications for non-BCS schools, including non-revenue, men & women would be immense.
On another issue, how about limiting the number of coaches/assistants and/or incomes? Salaries are wild.

So the NCAA has tried to limit coaches and salaries but they lost in court on anti-trust grounds.
I actually think limiting scolarships is a bad idea because it gives institutuional state schools a big leg up. texas: "hey kid we don't have a scolarship offer for you but neither does SMU come to texas a pay 20k less a year"

Re: NCAA Discusses Cutting Scholarships...
then we give them "academic" "need based" scholarships

Re: NCAA Discusses Cutting Scholarships...
Well problem with that is if you start giving one student academic scolarships for 1060 sat's what are you going to say to the kid with a 1400? need based is ok if they actually have the money for it.

Re: NCAA Discusses Cutting Scholarships...
Is this bad for us in that it encourages teams to rely more on walkons?

Re: NCAA Discusses Cutting Scholarships...
It really doesn't change that at all. Kids are going to take a scholarship-plus preferred walkons are limited to 15 a year. Even state schools tuition and board is beyond the capabilities of most recruits.

Re: NCAA Discusses Cutting Scholarships...
Cuts in scholarships should result in more parity on the field. But cuts in scholarships should go hand in hand with an increase in the number of schools eligible to participate in an NCAA sanctioned championship system I believe that more kids should be able to play on teams that are eligible for good bowls and/or a championship tournament of some kind.

Re: NCAA Discusses Cutting Scholarships...
OK you go ahead and run that by the BCS. NCAA does not have a Division 1A Championship. This propoposal already benefits the non-BCS schools---

It creates a bigger pool of talent for non-BCS schools, but it decreases the number of kids who play on a teams eligible to win the national championship. At least the BCS version of same.
