How to handle conf decision

Post by planoponyfan »

This past day has been dizzying for me trying to keep up with everything that's going on.
The bottom line is that SMU has to decide if it wants to stay in the newly merged CUSA/MWC or go with the Big East. Since the Big East has made our invite conditional on whether 3 other schools go with us, it further complicates the decision.

As much as I like an invite from a BCS AQ conference, I think I would conditionally accept the Big East invitation based on whether the other 3 agree to go to. This would put the burden on the CUSA/MWC to convince Boise et al to stay put and put the burden on the Big East to try to convince them to move. If the Big East can't get these schools to join, I think it's in serious danger of folding as a football conference or at least losing it's AQ status. If the CUSA/MWC loses these schools, I don't think it will have much chance at becoming a BCS AQ conference.

All in all, this is a nice problem to have. Thank you June Jones!

Coach Jones and Steve Orsini have had a plan in place and have been working through the plan each year. It's amazing how much winning can do for a program. I've had Gator, Seminole and Knight fans texting and calling to offer congrats on SMU's recent success.

Big thanks and a hearty congratulations to President Turner, Steve Orsini and Coach Jones for once again putting this program in a position to succeed.

Go Ponies! Beat UCF.

That's the conditional offer. All or none. Hence you agree to accept it. Making your post irrelevant.

Let's put it this way, the Big East is pretty desperate to keep their football conference together.
Yes, it was a conditional invitation.. but as we know, these things are fluid and can change. I have no doubt that if 2 of us accepted they would take us and look for another school to add.
I'm not sure that would be a good deal for SMU.

In addition to just trying to survive, the Big East is concerned about losing its BCS AQ status. That's why it wanted TCU and now wants Boise State. So while we might get into the Big East next year and it might still have AQ status, that could go away if better quality is not added to the conference. I think SMU is wise to sit tight for a bit and see how things shake out. I also think a conditional acceptance is a way to hedge our bets and get the best deal possible.
