Wasington - Example of the importance of Coaching

It seems that most Bennett supportors argue that the lack of talent and the recruiting contstraints against Bennett for reason enough to give him more time. I feel that when you couple the Pye model that we are living under with poor coaching you get where we are today

Look at Washington. With Slick Rick they had one of the nations best recruiters who always had top 10-15 classes. They won when we was there. Now, a year and a half later, with players predominantly recruited by Neuhisel and his top recruiting classes, the team will prob finish 1-10. Washington has the talent, but Gilbertson was agood OC, but a bad HC. He took over at Cal from Bruce Snyder and took at top 20 program under snyder to the bottom of the Pac-10. Great guy, not a good coach.

What do we get by giving a bad coach more time?

I think another example closer to home was Pat Sullivan at TCU. A very good recruiter, but an equally poor head coach. It is one of the reasons that Franchione was able to take that 1-10 group to 8-3 and a bowl victory. Talent and coaching equalled vastly improved results.

And wasn't our boy Bennett the DC of that 1-11 TCU team?

Then again, the Washington Redskins have changed coaches and they are still losing. For the that matter the cowboys have a great coach and have been losing this year. The coach has to have a good QB to win or else.

Good point. I think Eckert and/or Romo and/or Phillips can be a good QB. But none of them has reached that level yet. They each have made some plays that frankly weren't made by QBs over the past few years, but the consistency isn't there. Once one of them reaches that level, things will look different.

I dont think QB is the main issue. I think both Phillips and Eckert are capable. Phillips might even be a great player someday. What they need is sufficient time to operate in the pocket. And the running backs need some room to run. Obviously, offensive line play as a unit is our biggest weakness. The receivers also need improvement as a group. It has to concern you when your leading receiver is an unknown transfer from D-2 Minnesota-Morris. Chase has made some nice plays, and Devin Lowery showed alot of promise before disappearing on the depth chart.
