Defensive line

Postby DallasDiehard » Sun Nov 07, 2004 11:22 am

MAJOR credit has be be dished out to Coach Bennett, Coach Gush, Coach Sawyer and Coach Roark, and anyone else involved with getting the defensive line ready for yesterday's game. That was BY FAR the best performance by the defensive line since this staff took over before the 2002 season.

-- Adami with an interception? Are you kidding? Way to get those big paws wrapped around the pumpkin, AA!

-- Desmond Jones was in the backfield numerous times, making tackles and forcing Tulsa RBs to run into the waiting arms of another SMU defender. And that blocked FG was HUGE. Bad (low) kick, but he got through that line and got his big mitt up there. Thats a young player maturing and making a play when his team needed it most.

-- Charlie Berry and Brent Karrington are getting better every week. I'm going to keep saying they're too small and too slow ( ) every week, so they can prove me wrong again.

-- And then there's Justin Rogers. WOW. GREAT GAME. He was everywhere. Granted, it helped that he was playing across from an OT who didn't have 100 pounds on him, but he was quick, he played with strength and leverage, and he was relentless. Sensational performance. He looked like Luke Johnson. Sure hope his injury (ankle?) isn't serious - we need another game like that from Rogers.

Very true, DD. These coaches have taken some heat this year for the defensive line's play (although I subscribe to the thory that coaches often get too much credit and too much blame, since it's the players out on the field playing). These coaches deserve big accolades for the line's performance yesterday - what a great showing.

Now let's see it again next week against the Wolf Pack!

I have watched over 30 games in the past 6 years and Tulsa game was the best all around D-Line performance I have seen in that time. Adami as the anchor and mentor to his cast of replacements was sterling saturday (Randy and Lucky and Mouton will have big shoes to fill but have shown real promise). A complete game. Desmond along with Bonds were more solid then I have ever seen them. The pressure from the edge was awsome with at least 8 pressures and 2 sacks. Berry and Melvin in support were solid (Berry probably being the most productive D-lineman we have, minutes played and plays made). If they can remain healthy and continue to improve, terrific. Looks like Berry and Karrington will have to team up again with Justin hurting this week with Melvin doing double duty in rotation. I also like Gush making the calls from the sideline. Great Job Mustangs!..

Amen. The d-line was very good. Bonds had two blockers at a time and did not budge except to make plays (until he got dinged.) 8)
