Authoritarian Method to Increase AttendanceFellas,
I think all students should be required to attend the games. Penalty for breaking this rule should be an F in one class. I think this rule would certainly increase attendance. God Bless President Bush and SMU
I'll repeat what I said earlier before my post 'magically' disappeared.
![]() SMU is a 'private university', not TEXAS A&M where the C.T.s (if you don't know what that term means then go to the back of the class) have to go to the games. There's one surefire solution to getting students to the games: WINNING! Last night was a start and our two other "W's" this season as well.
I think the fraternities should take it upon themselves to make sure they make a good showing. It was sad that they seemed to boycott the game yesterday. I know they had some reasons to boycott, but the fact of the matter is that the football team did not put sanctions on them. Don't punish fans that happen to be students, fans in general, alumni fans, and the team and coaches for sanctions that were put on by the administration. That was bullS. The fraternities actions in recent weeks are inexcusable and they make this school look like a joke.
We must shake the \"snob\" reputation. Bring Dallas back to SMU.
Re:
What happened to the frats?
Evidently they were not happy with the University's new rules on the Vard put in place to try to better control underage drinking (if that is even really possible) so, as it was told to me, the frats and sororities decided to boycott the football game. It didn't help the attendance numbers any and if in the end it puts us on D-1 probation, they have only hurt themselves...and us alumns. You know, I enjoy a good drink myself, but I am able to enjoy a good football game without one. The game is over at 8:30...they have another five and a half hours to hit the club scene and booze it up all they want...I just don't get it. There really is more to life than that.
Well, it's possible that at least ONE fraternity guy was in attendance at the game. He was the one who managed to smuggle himself into the Nevada huddle wearing a sportcoat and a Nevada helmet!
Re:
I totally agree PK. It is ridiculous that they expect underage people to be allowed to drink. In the end, this rule may end up helping with attendance because the frosh and soph's won't be pukey drunk.
Why doesn't the IFC institute a rule that for year-end frat awards % attendance at football and basketball games will be part of equation. That way if the el nerdo fraternity that couldn't win any intramural game got 100% to football games while Sir Studley Fraternity sent 1%, they could move ahead of Sir Studley in the standings. Extra bonus points for attendance at away games. I guarantee you that the next week Sir Studley would be out in force.
Although I know that Mr.Mustang1965/Laura Bush Lover disagree, I think there should be provisions for the student organizations to support the athletes. Frats, student band, drama clubs, and athletes should all do everything they can to support one another.
I reffed enough intramural games between the Phi Delts and the Betas to know that they really cared about those points standings. I remember one year for the IM track meet, they had the independents compete with the fraternities to save time. One dorm was full of swimmers and had a grad student who happened to be training for the Olympic Track team. They won almost every event. The Frats were begging to have the points recalibrated without the independant scores factored in since it would affect the final standings.
Re:
Sir, good points. However, the band support is incredible. Hell, they should be able to write the players off as dependents on their '04 tax return!
Re:
Can band alumni and supporters take those deductions? Just send 'da money.
East Stang-
I think we're taking about two different things. I thought the earlier post was in reference to the year-end awards given to the fraternities via IFC. I think you are referring to the IM standings. Now, I know of at least one fraternity that if you threatened to impact their IM standings, that would be very powerful motivation for them...and's it not the Betas unless something radically changed since my time on the Hilltop. However, I still think points docked from either of these awards/compeitions would have little effect on attendance. Of course, it's never going to happen anyway but I do like a little halthy debate from time to time. Also, I think more Greeks would have come to the game if the game had been played in less foul weather. I really believe that, but I guess we'll never know.
Re:
Absolutely, Diamond. First, I would encourage you to consider 'adopting that player' if you want the IRS to have a favorable view on this deduction. Please note that I am not a CPA, nor do I play a CPA on TV.
