Notre Dame - just say no

Postby EastStang » Mon Dec 06, 2004 4:50 pm

The list of coaches politely saying "no" to the Golden Dome fellas is growing daily. Meyer said, I'll take Florida. The Iowa coach said "no thanks". Steve Mariucci would rather coach the Lions than the Irish. John Gruden likes Tampa. This is what happens when you are perceived as not giving a coach a chance to succeed or to fail. Coaches sense that expectations are unrealistic and go elsewhere.

Have you seen ND's schedule next year?

at Michigan
Mich St.
at Washington
at Purdue
at Pitt
USC
BYU
Tenn
Navy
Syracuse
at Stanford

And the new coach knows that 21-15 wasn't good enough before. Good luck finding a coach ND.

At the risk of sounding like a nit-picker, I believe "Wazzou" refers to the, as Keith Jackson would so, "the boys out Pullman way," or Wash. State. The Huskies, on the other hand, would refer to their position as the "U-Dub" job.

He's got way too much class and integrity - characteristics that apparently eluded and perhaps baffled his former employers in South Bend.

There's a rumor going around (which I doubt has any validity) that Notre Dame has contacted Jackie Sherrill. Could you picture that?

Sherrill in South Bend? I just don't see it.

Another way to look at the "Notre Dame - just say no" idea: hopefully recruits will continue to "just say no" to the Irish. When they crash and burn for a few years, hopefully that will cause NBC to end that ridiculous TV contract that allows ND to maintain its elitist attitude. When that happens, it also will be a step -- albeit one of what needs to be many steps -- toward crumbling the BCS as we know it.

Doesn't help when ND is also cheap. Reports were that the Irish were offering half of what Florida was paying. I am sure that coaches are looking at all the positives:

Brutal Schedule
Must be a Top Ten team year after year
Painful Academic Restrictions
Not paid as much as the other top coaches in the country

Looks like a job that nobody wants. You change the $$$ to the highest paid job in the country and I think they might get some more takers.

Some might say it's a shame that it's come to that (not me - I always thought Notre Dame was about money and nothing more), but I admit, BrianT, you're right on with this analysis.
