Somewhere on the way to the HOF, Luker got lost...

Postby aggiejohn » Tue Jul 02, 2002 2:49 pm

Ponyfans,

I will always root for the ponies. I had sympathy for your program when the NCAA brought the thunder down.
I faintly remember the day when K. Luker signed to play at SMU. The highly-touted QB from Stephenville was one of the most prolific HS QBs in history and I thought he could deliver SMU to the top of the WAC. Somewhere along the way to the NFL, Kelan got lost and I forgot about him.

My question for you is: What happened? Please fill me in about his 3 years at SMU. I know that he redshirted when McCown was still around, but after he transferred, why didn't Luker step up to the plate? Is he _really_ going to quit the team and leave a free education? Has anyone heard his "band"? Are they that good?

I don't know Luker that well, but I've recieved a fair share of information about him during his time at SMU and been around him a few times to know that he is a very mellow, laid back and likeable individual. He, along with several others, even helped my wife and I move a few things out of our apartment when it collapsed into a sinkhole. As fate would have it, I think he carried my guitars to safety.

There’s a subtle difference between the lives of your average college student and the average student athlete. I think most of us that take up server space on this website are/were the former. I certainly am, and watching two younger brothers go through college as the latter I’ve noticed their experiences have been, well, more like the rest of their lives, than my college experience was for me. I went far away, saw my family only at Xmas and the summer… while they usually see a half dozen or more free-ticket groupies (myself among them) every weekend in the fall. I was free to do just about anything I pleased without obligation (and usually did), while they are tied to a rather rigorous schedule of eating right, working out, watching film, etc on top of all the normal school stuff.

I’m not naïve to miss the fact they too are exposed to a world many of us will never get the priviledge to see. However, and I’m not speaking for Luker, sometimes whatever it is we’ve been doing for 10-15 years gets old, and you find you want something else. Or a new opportunity just presents itself, which is often how the best things happen to us.

I’ve already said it before, but whatever Kelan decides I hope it works out for him. I certainly believe, under the current circumstances, SMU would be better off WITH him this year.

As for the band, can’t say I’ve heard them before. Some of the more musical snobbish on the team (the King Crimson gives birth to a Widespread Panic of String Cheese type) have been known to say it’s very radio-friendly stuff, which is “a bad thing.” But, those guys are kind of like the baseball player who doesn’t use steroids… you know the old guy stuck throwing batting practice to the guys that do…

Since Luker was first and foremost supposed to be our QB, I was prepared to trash his efforts in the recording booth. I haven't seen them live, but the cuts I've heard are surprisingly well produced. They're considerably better than what you'd expect from your average college/garage band.
