The importance of post-season play

Postby RGV Pony » Mon Apr 04, 2005 11:30 pm

This may be (somewhat) off topic, but I think it is apropo on the football board as well. While in Indy visiting my daughter this weekend, we also took in the women's final four game in support of my other daughter the LSU student. We happened to stay at the hotel that was the HQ for the "Baylor Bear Foundation," which I guess is the equivalent of the Mustang Club. Interacting with those folks, you could tell that a large number of them a) generally don't travel to atheltic events, b) were jazzed by this newfound success, and c) had invested big $$ in Baylor gear and eager to pour more $$ Baylor's way. Hell the entire hotel staff had on Baylor T-shirts. Every other guest through the door they offered Baylor stuff. I had no idea there were that many loud Baylor backers in the neighborhood. Certainly not in line with my recollection of a Baylor fball game. No fewer than 7 busloads left that one hotel for the game.

Long story short, I can see how such an experience...bowl game...NCAA for women/men...would make a huge impact on any program, SMU's included. I can also see how the absence of such events costs membership, costs support, and makes it difficult to build relationships.

This can be a good year in C-USA - I am not predicting a bowl but with 5 or 6 wins I think the SMU fathful will be VERY happy.

Fans should start putting some money away for our first Bowl game. Start a separate savings accout and be ready!

If not this year maybe the next. Keep some powder dry!

Yea BUS. I wish I had your optimism. I used to but after (how long has it been since 1989?) all those losing seasons I'm a lot more cautious about predicting anything related to SMU athletics.

My optimism is WAY gone. These days I try to think honestly and less emotionally.

Go Mustangs
