Ryan RowlandFormer SMU walkon goes 16 0f 22 in Texas Tech Red Black game. It would be nice to still have him on our roster.
It's a little more expensive to walk on at SMU than Tech. I'm just speculating here, but assume that if he'd caught the coaches eye and they thought he could be a player for us in the near future, we wouldn't have offered two QB scholarships to H.S. seniors...they could have given him one of those spots.
Could it be that he's a candidate to become a "system QB"? I don't even know if he has a legitimate shot at any playing time -- they're not on our schedule, so I haven't looked at their roster (or QB situation). But there's some evidence to support the idea:
- Kliff Kingsbury goes to Tech, plays four years, throws for about 262 miles to attain legend status in Lubbock, and becomes a marginal NFL prospect, drafted to carry Tom Brady's clubs. - B.J. Symons throws for more yards than anyone in NCAA history (I think), gets a brief NFL tryout (didn't he?) and was done. - Sonny Cumbie comes in, puts up big numbers, is not projected to get even a free agent tryout. I hope Rowland does well in Lubbock and enjoys being closer to home. Perhaps playing in The Leech's gimmick offense will allow him to enjoy some on-field success. Good luck to him (unless he plays against us in a couple years when we resume playing TT.)
Actually, he's carrying David Carr's clubs now.
