Q&A with QBs coach DAN MORRISON — Part I

Postby PonyPride » Sat Jul 13, 2013 7:38 pm

SMU quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison visited with PonyFans.com to discuss a number of topics regarding the Mustangs' signal-callers. In the first installment of a two-part series, Morrison talks about Garrett Gilbert's development as a passer and runner, and compared Gilbert's progress to that of some of the former Hawaii quarterbacks with whom Morrison worked prior to his arrival at SMU.

There's a lot of information there, and it's encouraging to know that Gilbert's progress last year was a little like Brennan's first year in Hawaii. I'm not saying he's going to put up Brennan-like numbers (also not saying he won't), but it's good to know that for someone smart who works hard, and it appears that Gilbert is both of those things, there could be room for a lot more improvement.

let's hope for Gilbert's sake and for SMU's that he has a monster senior season beginning with a big upset of Tech on opening day. Could this be the year we look back and say SMU football reached a turning point?

I agree with the assessment that Gilbert's running has as much to do with strength as it does with pure speed. When he first started to take off with the ball last year, I sometimes cringed at the idea that he could get hurt. By the end of the season, that never even occurred to me.
