Aresco: American 'could be above the line' in Div. 4

Postby Water Pony » Fri Aug 02, 2013 11:20 am

NEWPORT, R.I. -- The new American Athletic Conference “could well be above the line” in a new Division 4 according to AAC commissioner Mike Aresco after speaking to his peers in other leagues.

Aresco repeatedly made the case for his new conference belonging in whatever shape a new division might take. He said the 2014 lineup of 11 American schools “overwhelmingly” support a stipend however, “we didn't have an actual vote.”

Amen!
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Hopefully we make the cut.

If the haves only play each other, a bunch of teams that are used to winning will have to get used to losing. They need the AAC and MWC to be in the loop here somewhere, to provide cannon fodder for their schedules. How the victims get paid for that is a question.

ever since they 1st started talking about the "super conferences" I assumed it would come down to budget thresholds. Paying player stipends is just another piece of that puzzle. Would like to think SMU will choose to compete at the highest level, whatever the cost...but the lack of support for our athletic programs has long been a concern.

I think it would be a lot easier to build fan support if the students and alumni felt the administration was committed to playing at the highest levels. Our administration and president consistently send mixed signals.
