1965 Purdue GameMy brother played for Purdue (on the '65 & '66 teams) that played the Ponies. He absolutely loved his trip to Dallas and enjoyed the tour of SMU. Because of that trip, he talked me into going to SMU (10 years later). As a side note, Ron Meyer was an assistant at SMU during that time.
Re: 1965 Purdue GameBoston, are you sure about Meyer. I don't recall Meyer ever being an assistant at SMU. Came straight to us from UNLV where he was the head coach.
Meyer had been with Purdue, not SMU. After Purdue he was a scout for the Cowboys, then UNLV, then SMU
Do any of you remember is this was the game that Jim Hagle (?) made the 93 yard run for a touchdown? I remember seeing that play sometime in my younger years and seeing pictures of John LaGrone making an incredible block, basically sealing off the entire left side of the Horns defensive line. Is that this game or another? Thanks for any insight.
![]() ![]() ![]() Here is Jim Hagle's run, and John Roderick's catch before halftime. Did John Lagrone also play offense? I know he was a nose guard.
Great pics. Thanks for posting them. You can see the block I mentioned in the first picture. I can't quite make out the number on the jersey. I always thought it was LaGrone, but I may be wrong. Anyway, thanks for pics.
HALLELUJAH!
![]() This is the game that will ALWAYS be the most remembered by me...til the day I die. And the kiss from the cheerleader at left was all part of that day, too. Glad to see it got recognition!!!!!!!
One of Livvy's passes went to a UT d back but Roderick mugged him and took the ball away. John had dropped several easy passes earlier. We kidded John later that Mike needed to throw the ball to a dback who could catch and let John rob him. Fun, great game.
Purdue's coach Fat Jack Mallenkof had said of SMU that they didn't belong on the field with a Big 10 team. He lost his #1 ranking that game.
Ron Meyer & PurdueRon Meyer played at Purdue ('64) then coached there for a few years before moving on to the Cowboys. He then went to UNLV to coach before SMU got him.
