That is undoubtedly a matter of opinion. College Football is all about tradition, not new and better logos. The only think that needs updating for SMU is to return to winning ways.
The choice of merchandise is significantly greater than it has been. Hopefully, we can see some of this stuff on shelves in area stores, too.
There would have been more SMU stuff in stores a long time ago if there had been a demand for it, but 15years of losing doesn't create much of a demand nor will a new logo when one is not needed.
The ONLY question I have is that while the new marks are a nice update and an alternative to the classic Pony, why would SMU de-emphasize one of the most recognized logos on PLANET EARTH? Incorporate the two and market them both. Look at all of the variations of the Mavericks and Rangers logos, for example on their merchandise.
If indeed there is a demand for the new mark...fine ...supply it, but not at the expense of the traditional marks and logos.
And, I do agree with the incredible oversight of not having ONE Pony logo on the masthead of the new website. SMU IS THE PONY. Just as UT is the LONGHORN.
That one is hard to understand. Perhaps it's because no one in the marketing department has any ties to SMU other than a pay check.
But, Give Shawn H. and his gang credit for spending the money and the time to get SMU moving in a new marketing direction with the new marks. Just waiting for some more hype to surround it.
Shawn is a good guy and works hard. Me thinks this "new marketing direction" has probably been shoved down his throat by his boss who evidently has no concern for the thoughts of the devoted SMU fans that have supported this group for the last 15 years through contributions to the Mustang Club and the purchasing of season tickets all the while praying for a return to winning teams.
Now, let's go kick some tail in C-USA.
Amen!
