Mustangs benefit from cutting-edge technology

Postby PonyPride » Sun Aug 18, 2013 3:13 pm

To help get through the grind of preseason camp, the SMU football team experienced a new kind of treatment Saturday, stepping into a "sauna" that drops as low as 220 degrees below zero in an effort to accelerate recovery and help heal injury's. Cryousa's managing director, SMU sports medicine director Mike Morton and several Mustang players visited with PonyFans.com to discuss the benefits of the technology ... and how it feels.

Looks just like TCU's. I think TCU was the first in the country it have one (At least that is what they said on ESPN when I saw it several months ago). I hope they decide to get one.

Many schools now have these...the technology has evolved from ice baths. Cryo is right in Snider Plaza and SMU athletes have been using it for awhile. Its great stuff.

This type of new technology scares me a little. Hopefully someone will not try to over do it and end up dead. I am sure it is safe if used properly but young kids always try to stretch the limit. Needs close supervision if it moves outside of the business location.

If used on a head coach will it improve the following year’s recruiting class?

I think this year's freshman class is going to turn out to be pretty good, maybe JJ's best yet. But don't let that get in the way of a chance to take a swing at JJ, even in a cool story like this.

Having played quite a few sports (not in college) and certainly not having a clue about physiology, I never heard of using extreme cold to speed up recovery. I always thought you were supposed to use heat. This is interesting, and I hope this gives our players the best chance at recovery... anything to make them perform better and get/remain injured less.

I may start trying cold showers after my workout now...

Athletes in a lot of sports have been using ice tubs for years. If this can accelerate or intensify that recovery process, do it!
