Dear Mr. Copeland, With all due respect, I must inquire as to the reasoning
behind the new athletic logos. Is the reasoning behind them due to the lack of
merchandise sales of the older, more traditional logos? If so, please note that
the reason why the old logo wasn't selling probably has more to do with the
fact that spectator/revenue sports are not doing very well. Sure, SMU's
athletics program is one of the best in the nation, but no one can say the same
about our Football or Men's Basketball program.
Alumni and casual fans alike have a place to talk at http://www.ponyfans.com, though
lately the debate has turned from when our next winning football season might
come to the absurdity of the new logos. It seems like the consensus is going
the same way that it went during the "Mighty Mustang Thunder" experiment a few
years back: Tradition should have precedent over change. Give me a red running
Mustang (like the logo on the helmets) any day.

Please note that I have no association to the school other than being a very
interested prospective student. I have no SMU merchandise, but would purchase
some if there was something with the old logos on it.
I know you are familiar with the University of Virginia and their athletic
program, since you were the A.D. there for a time. I have loads of ties to that
school and I will tell you why the "V-Sabre" logo caught on there: The old logo
flat out stunk, and the new one was very refined and sleek looking. It was
unique among logos: When someone sees it, everyone knows who it belongs to. SMU
already had that with the running Mustang. The University of Texas has it with
their Longhorn. The University of Southern California has it with the
interlocking "SC" and so on. Therefore, why change the logo? There is only one
running Mustang.
GO MUSTANGS!

Jim Copeland will return to the office Monday, July, 25
Why is he out for that long?
Anyway, I encourage everyone who does not like the logo to send a similar email!
