New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down CeremonyI confess I love tradition, power of teammates and schools, such as Vanderbilt, Northwestern and Stanford that embrace their uniqueness, including pride in their academics. Here is a video of Coach Franklin's Anchor Down Ceremony. Seems Anchor Down and Pony Up should be have this in common. Enjoy:

Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down CeremonyFranklin was a great hire for Vandy. Wouldn't be surprised to see him at USC or down in Austin next year.
However, if the rumors are true about him telling players to delete texts and videos from their phones pertaining to that rape scandal that got some of the players dismissed, he'll be lucky to have a job in the Arena league. I'll be very interested to see how that plays out. If that's the cost of being competitive in the SEC, Vandy will happily go back to 2-10 seasons. Their administration and powers that be will not tolerate that [deleted], that's for damn sure. We can, however, take a page out of Franklin's book selling ourselves to recruits with academics and location. Would you rather spend four years in Waco or Lubbock, or right in the heart of Dallas? We're a nationally recognized university with a strong alumni base in one of the fastest growing metropolitan regions in the nation. These are the things we need to be selling to recruits when we're up against Tech and Baylor. That's what Franklin has done pitching a Vanderbilt education and Nashville to guys who have offers from other SEC programs. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down CeremonyI respect what Vanderbilt and NW are doing to compete against the large public schools, but personally very turned off by both coaches. There is no football tradition at Vanderbilt (IMO), and instead of trying to build on the success of ND and show respect and admiration, they actually try to pretend they are better. The vandy coach is benefiting from being in the SEC and riding its coattails (which is smart to do), but there is no real football tradition there. I remember last year he said there were 5-6 teams in the SEC alone better than ND, including his team. SEC arrogance at its best that even the ticks off of an ox think they are part of why that conference is relevant.
Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down CeremonyWe try to sell academics and location; however, most of the recruits want party, chase women and not worry about academics. Hence, OSU is a great choice.

I'm pretty sure you can party and chase women in Dallas as well. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down Ceremony
Yeah, that was always the bummer about my time at SMU: no opportunities to party and surrounded by horribly unattractive women. Now that I think back on those years (the parts I can remember after all the brain cells I killed drinking, er, studying) I'm not sure why I went there in the first place. ![]() "I don't think anyone around the country has any idea how good we are going to be." - Coach Justin Stepp

The recruits all seem to like Texas de Brazil......... Peruna is my mascot!
Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down CeremonyFranklin is doing some outstanding things at Vanderbilt that no other coach has done. Best hire they have ever made.

Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down Ceremonywell, I think his hype was a bit corny. I worked for a shipping company and we had a huge anchor (several tons, really big anchor) at the entrance. the beloved CEO once commended that the anchor symbol was more attuned to an item that weighted you down, prevented forward movement.
I think the running free wild mustang is more my style. after all Vanderbilt are the commodores. If I was approached by a gang of commodores in an alley, I wouldn't be intimidated. just saying.
Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down Ceremony
I would take my chances in an alley against a gang of undersized horses before a gang of naval officers, assuming both were hostile 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down CeremonyVandy is taking full advantage of the demise of 10RC, and wisely so. When I was at Bama in the 80s, Vandy just tried to keep up. Now they are making waves and good for them.
And, on a side note, it's a three way tie for the best looking college women: SMU, Ole Miss, and Bama. All southern and All beautiful (well maybe not the engineering majors).

Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down CeremonyWIsh we had a coach like Franklin at SMU that puts emphasis on recruiting. My twin bro graduated from Vandy, and he raved about the hire when it was made years ago. Good to see them making strides in the SEC. Just goes to show that top recruits and motivation go a long way in college football.
They did a 180 and canned their old lifeless coach to get Franklin, we should follow suit.
Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down Ceremony
No joke, we need to sell stuff like that. Dallas is an awesome city that is appealing to recruits. Maybe the student body and "culture" at SMU isn't, but in some ways it's a similar problem to what Georgia Tech faces in Atlanta or "The U" in Miami; sometimes it might be better to sell the city than the school. 2005 PonyFans.com Rookie of the Year Award Recipient
Re: New Traditions: Vanderbilt's Anchor Down Ceremony
We need a coach and staff who are willing to sell first. Our current staff expect recruits to call them up and send their video in.
