Cosmetic changes to disguise a losing team

Postby Sam I Am » Fri Jul 15, 2005 6:05 pm

When ever a new coach takes over a team, he changes the uniform to show that the team is making a fresh start. But when an existing coach dabbles with the uniform yearly, it is a cosmetic attempt to compensate for losing in hopes of signaling that things are changing for the better. A good team might vary uniform designs for the sake of increasing product sales, especially in the pro leagues. If anyone truly cared about the uniforms appearance, they would see how it looks from a distance up in the stadium, not down on the field. I like a red helmut with a white running mustang, a blue jersey with white nuermals, and white pants without red and blue candy stripes. DKR was right about bric brac not being on the uniform. Recruits will come to a school because of the coaches and the team's winning record. If anything, SMU needs a stable logo that is easily identified with the team - the running pony. On with the games. I beginning to want a dress code. How's that for being an old foggy?

So I guess your not considering MIAMI a top team in this country... I guess you dont consider MICHIGAN a top team. And i guess you think other programs such as Cal, Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Maryland are slouch programs as well.

I said MAJOR way! Read Above! Michigan highlighting numbers on the jersey is not a uniform overhaul. Gee- I don't see a school listed above that has changed helmets in the last decade. Bottom line is we had the best uniforms in the country and someone changed them with no regard to tradition. Your opinion seems to be the minority anyway.

Yeah, you're right. The 68 - 72 uniforms with the TRADITIONAL RED
HELMETS were our best uniforms ever. Doak Walker, Kyle Rote, and
most Mustangs before wore RED helmets :!: I personally saw that
Hayden Fry had RED helmets from 62 until 72.

I know I am a new fan to the boards so many of you might not consider my opinion to be worth anything around here. So be it.

I like new uniforms, though I haven't seen the ones mentioned in the first post, but personally I love the uniforms back when Eric Dickerson played. However, I love the idea of the new uniforms. The team is gradually getting better. I know that SMU doesn't bring in top level talent recruits but they will eventually. It is true that uniforms is one way to try and persuade a recruit to come to your school because they might see it as the school changing for the better and they could be part of the change. I don't know how to explain it any better than that. The uniforms may be the smallest factor in the persuasion process but you cannot deny that sometimes change can be a good thing. Once the team starts winning, ain't no one going to care about the uniforms.

Besides, I'm starting to think that the old fogies on this board are still stuck in the past. They think that if we switch to the old uniforms, we will start winning again. :P

Hell, if we switched the old uniforms and started winning, I'd be all over that like white on rice.

Guess that means you're not going to be there do this yourself, huh?

Amen, East! If we come out and beat Baylor and TCU and A&M, we could be in lavender helmets and paisley jerseys and I imagine most of Pony Nation will love them. I admit I might even order one if we did that.

And, for what it's worth, I know a PonyParent who quotes her son as saying the team is fired up about the new look. She says he thinks just about all of the players like them.

Start out with a couple of wins, and I'll like them, too.
