In the 90's the coaches could only recruit players that were already qualified before they spoke with them. I will be glad when we can start comparing ourselves to other decent teams and not pre JJ teams in terms of talent. We can have the best talent since the DP and still have mid to lower tier talent in the conference. Hardcore JJ supporters compare our talent to teams that were handcuffed in recruiting as opposed to the other lower tier BCS teams. The recruiting restrictions would have been lifted for any incoming coach as they had already agreed to do that when they were talking to Paul Johnson.

This X 1,000,000. Eventually we're going to have to focus on where we want this program to be instead of where it's already been. No matter how good we may look compared to other post DP teams we still look like crap against top competition in this state (even starting to look bad against other non AQ competition in the state as well). Bottom line is this DITR stuff is a pretty useless way to build a big time program unless you have some strategist/development wizard like Chris Petersen (and June is not one of those).

I wholeheartedly agree with you on this. Since we've been operating on (truly/almost-fully) less restricted recruiting for less than a year, it will obviously take awhile before we can make this sort of comparison.

I think you have to take what SMU says in press releases and talking points with a grain of salt. They are first and foremost trying to promote the university. Since this is June's 6th year, and really the first with fully, quasi-unrestricted recruiting and admissions (and School of Education), etc., and these changes have been brought about SLOWLY and only with a fair amount of wrangling, it would be inaccurate to believe that Paul Johnson or any other coach who would have potentially walked into this position would have had a free hand with recruiting.

"wholeheartedly agree with you on this. Since we've been operating on (truly/almost-fully) less restricted recruiting for less than a year, it will obviously take awhile before we can make this sort of comparison."

OK you want to continue to perpetuate this myth-I'm tired of hearing it.

Name a single player who SMU offered that was not admitted to SMU and has ever started a single game at the Division 1A level. Not a single person has ever come up with 1 recruit since June Jones came here that fits that description. We have waited on more than 20 to qualify. There has been no recruiting restrictions that have hurt June Jones until you can answer this question. We don't need one of your long winding BS spewing suck-up to June Jones diatribes. Just a list of names

Neither Johnson nor Jones would have had to recruit from players that had already qualified. Your spin attempts and redaction efforts are rather poor. As Stallion put it not many of June's recruits or transfers have been turned away due to academic issues. See Shawnbrey , Daren Kitchen, and J. R. McConico. Now It is starting to come out that just how pro June and not pro SMU that you really are. smh.

I remember when Coach Shumate came and spoke to members of our men's group at our church and someone asked him about SMU and how recruiting was going there. He said that it was tough because they gave him a list of players that had already qualified for SMU and that he could not recruit a player that was not on that list. Glad June nor Doh had to go through that.
