Seeing as I basically said this was going to happen on this board on 9/24, I will add this:
June's current contract sucks from SMU's perspective. Be clear that there is no reduced buyout. Fire him and pay him the remaining amount on his contract ($2 mil per year). That is a lot of money. You can [deleted] and moan about it, but that is a lot of money to pay someone to not coach. I guess after the ASU debacle we could have tried to fire him for cause, but that, too, was dicey.
And we aren't going to tell him to fire assistants. A couple will likely quit and take other jobs (and probably not the ones we want, btw). One, he is not going to listen anyway and will hire croneys. Second, finding suitable assistants in the current environment will be difficult.
I wish we had big 4 conference money but we don't. This is a treading water move to save $2 million.
