The longer this plays out, the better (IMHO).

There can't be any jobs that Jones thinks will pay more than SMU's $2M (for 2014 season), which means there could be some big stipulations in the extension that may be causing Jones to have pause (incentives, milestones, staff, recruiting, etc.).
