JUCOs

Postby BleedingRed+Blue » Tue Oct 08, 2002 5:35 pm

Just curious what folks think about the Morning News story (linked on the home page here) about the possibility of JUCOs being added to the recruiting pool. Personally, I'm in favor of it. If we can add a big, strong lineman or two, or a super-fast linebacker, or a more experienced quarterback, then I say go for it. I don't support it to the extent that we jeopardize our academic standards and the graduation rate of our athletes, but from a purely football standpoint, I'm all over the idea.

Thoughts anyone?

This is no change,SMU has always allowed in JUCO's the problem is that Athletes can not get admitted and be eligible to play because of their transferable hours. This is what they would have to change.

I say the JUCO route is a good way to go. I do not want to see the school compromise its academic standing by bringing in a team full of JUCOs, but it's not like there aren't JUCO students already in class, anyway. If a few key JUCOs can get us back on the right track and compete with the upper echelon of WAC teams, grab a few of them. Do not make this an annual practice -- once we get back on track and Bennett's recruiting machine is in place, we should stick with high school guys. But as a temporary solution to the void of depth, this is a good plan.

JUCOs are a great way to get things re-started. LSU was a conference doormat for years, then went the JUCO route. Now they rarely look at JUCOs, but they're strong enough that some top talent, especially from Louisiana, looks to Baton Rouge every year. They get most, if not all, of the top talent in Louisiana every year, and they also have done decent recruiting Texas, Mississippi and Arkansas, among others.

What plan? I've read that article a dozen times, and I still dont see what people are calling a plan. All it says is that they would like to think about this, but its not something they have any say in.

If a change is made, it would address transferable hours.
"Any decision like that would not be made by me or the athletic department," Copeland said. "It would be made through an academic route. ... I don't know where that will go. I would say the chances are we're not going to change a whole lot in terms of what is considered transferable credit."

So, whats the plan?

You can see the type of classes SMU already accepts at the following link. Links for PDF files are at the lower right hand side of the page.
