The question is what is it going to cost everybody around him. At EVERY STOP he's left someone holding the bag or blatantly went behind their back, with only WKU being exception because they knew what they were getting and put a $1.2M buyout clause in their contract - good for them.
Question for Stallion or any lawyers out there:
You represent Louisville in this case. You know full well what you're getting into. What do you put into his contract to protect yourself when this jackaninny decides to dump you/cheat on your wife/kick an old man down a flight of stairs?
I've done quite a few spokesperson agreements, including a few with NBA/NFL players, and I usually add a morality or misbehavior clause to cover any personal shenanigans. You also have a "services unique" clause to allow injunctive or equitable relief.

1) I would not care if he leaves for a better job. The reason Louiseville is a "good job" is that it leads to better jobs. That makes it easy to attract top HC and assistant coaches. I would have no problem with keeping it that way. I would just make sure that there was a buyout sufficient to cover the cost of finding a new HC and assistants when he leaves.
2) I would make sure that the contract has tight language to allow him to be fired "for cause" should he attempt to find any additional volleyball players jobs at the school.

WKU already did something that I have never seen, but is so freakin' smart:
Petrino's move from WKU to L'ville would require 2-game, home-home series. WKU put this in their BB coach buyout as well.

Arkansas had him on a $18,000,000 buy out. No reason Louisville does not do the same. That is better than one of the big bowls would pay.

I think holding a coach hostage is a bad idea. If he wants to leave, I really don't want him around. A fair buyout probably has a sliding scale based up the # of years left on the contract.

You can always cut it back but it would give you the leverage to know that if he were to bolt early you would be nicely compensated.

Yeah, WKU pretty much assured themselves of a home game sellout. That's really smart

How would this actually work? Does the new school pay the contract buy out? Why would a new employer agree to doing this? The HC doesn't handle scheduling. Is this actually enforceable?

It is obvious from the comments of WKU's AD that they hired Petrino knowing that he would move to a bigger program. Is this actually enforceable? Generally, courts will not order specific performance in cases where monetary damages can be determined. However, the monetary damages could be significant. Game in Bowling Green: 30,000 seats (including temporary seats) at $100 per tickets = $3M in revenue to WKU. Game in Nashville (60 miles away): ???? I predict that LV will end up playing the game.

I'm interested to know if it was specific to the school or to whoever hired BP - it coulda been Mississippi State, say, and they just got lucky it was a the big school next door.
