Why did we go for two?

From the game notes:
• In Phil Bennett’s three-plus seasons on the Hilltop, SMU is 6-1 when scoring 24 points
or more and 0-29 when scoring less than 24 points.

We should have just kicked the extra point. That would have guaranteed us recovering the onside kick and scoring another TD to win the game.
