Broussard Named SMU Running Backs Coach
Former NFL running back and UCLA backs coach joins Mustangs' staff

March 4, 2014

DALLAS (SMU) - Former UCLA running backs coach Steve Broussard has been named the backs coach on June Jones ' staff, the six-year SMU head coach announced on Tuesday.

“We drafted Steve in the first round when I was with the Falcons," Jones said. "He was a very, very productive player for us. He understands what we’re doing, what we’re trying to do here. He’s a good coach.”

Broussard's experience includes 10 years of collegiate coaching experience and an NFL playing career that spanned from 1990-99. As a member of the Bruins staff, Broussard was responsible for running backs as well as recruiting in Texas, California, Washington, Georgia and Florida. He mentored Doak Walker Award Finalist Johnathan Franklin, Pac-12 Freshman All-American Myles Jack and Freshman All-America Honorable Mention selection Paul Perkins.

Prior to his stint at UCLA, he served as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Arizona State. The Sun Devils were ranked in the top-25 of recruiting classes and were 10th in the nation in passing office (316.7 yards per game). Broussard also made coaching stops at Washington State and Portland State.

Broussard's playing experience included a standout career at Washington State before being drafted as the 20th overall pick in the 1990 draft by the Atlanta Falcons. In four seasons with the Falcons, he rushed for 1,472 yards, including 454 during his rookie campaign, caught 48 passes and registered 12 touchdowns. In his lone season with the Bengals, Broussard rushed for 403 yards and registered 43 receptions. As a Seahawk, he amassed 418 yards and caught 24 passes in his best season. After nine years in the NFL, he had 578 rushing attempts for 2,625 yards and caught 126 passes for 882 yards, as well as adding 22 touchdowns to his total.
