Mondays practice was fun to watch- Big fight

Postby tmustangp » Wed Mar 23, 2005 6:05 pm

mondays practice was a good one to watch.

1. The qb's looked sharp, up and down and hesitant.
Eckert: once more I know I am going out on a limb but watching him just reminds me of Major Applewhite, he has great pocket presence, very strong arm, great feet, and pin point accuracy with about a 20-25 mph cross wind yesterday.
Romo: was up and down. he had numerous passes that fell short of the reciever or were thrown behind the reciever but then there were other times where he threw a bullet between three guys.
Phillips: lets just say that he would have led the team in carries yesterday with the amt of times he pulled the ball down in Skull drills
(those of you not familiar with that term--recievers vs. linebackers and secondary) you shouldn't be pulling the ball down that much

2. The FIGHT: obviously this was the most exciting part of the afternoon, but it was good to see the guys competing hard enough to want to beat each other so bad that a brawl broke out between the first team O and 1st team D... Bennett calmly let them fight it out then stood between them and said

"if yall want to waste your energy like that, I will make you tired."
he then proceeded to make them do up downs for a good bit. gotta love the competiveness though.

3. The defense did not look great in Skull, mainly against Eckert, he made them look bad but the recieving choir looked very good.
-looks like we might have another Mike Hampton on our hands but
Ryan Kennedy is bigger. I don't think he dropped a pass and he had a few one hand grabs and then he can turn up field and start rumbling.
-Pellerin and Chase looked great by setting up the defenders and having sharp routes. Chase had one bad play where he fumbled and Edmonson made sure chase knew he didn't miss that. Lowery, turner and foster all looked good coming out of the slot most of the time. But pellerin definately lookds taller than 6-3.

4. I did not watch too much of the O line and the dline because I enjoy the action of Skull practice more but they sure do look bigger than the ones in the past even without Urbanus.

5. Special teams looked very good except for deep snapper. Mentzel was constantly hitting it 50-60 yds(40-45 yd net). going into camp word was bennett wanted to find a deep snapper, well lets hope they get one with a frosh coming in.

6. All in all it looked like a good practice and the fight definately made it more interesting.

My pick will stay the same: Eckert will start at QB next year.

too bad that Eckert can't play against the SKULL team during the regular season. Then we wouldn't have to worry about sacks, pressures, knockdowns, lack of mobility and turnovers-you know-like in real football.

but the important thing is that his progression was very impressive... he definately hit 75% of his throws (maybe higher) and he was able to make adjustments w/ audibles... stallion your point is correct, that is why i was not impressed with phillips one bit

Come on, Stallion, what is it with you? Any information that comes from someone other than you must immediately be shot down as insignificant? tmustangp was nice enough to attend practice and share some info with those of us who couldn't make it. I, for one, appreciate it.

Too bad you cant post anything about football that makes sense other than some bilge about rivals.com, not that those posts make much sense either. Do you really know anything about the actual game? You're like some kind of kermudgen or gouhl that sits in the corner and hurls totally intellectual vacant insults.----WOW---- :?:

That's "curmudgeon" and "ghoul" I believe, and he does know one thing - we have a long way to go before we are considered a serious football program.

Sorry about the spelling errors. It was late. You're right about that but "he" has problems with certain players on the team and "he" forgets that these are still college kids and they are all workin' their asses off and trying to improve. I just wonder if "he" has ever done anything more physical than push a pencil around.

PonyFan, I think you missed Stallion's point. I didn't take it as him shooting down the validity of what tmustangp saw, but rather how much it showed about the team's progress. Maybe I'm wrong. I agree that it's hard to tell based on skull drills, but I have to believe the Ponies will be better this year, if only because they have a full year of Coach Burns' offense under their belts. And supposedly the defensive packages are being expanded, too, so we can do more things on that side of the ball, now that we have more depth over there.

both Eckert and Phillips have played what amounts to about 8 games at SMU although each has been shuffled in and out by the revolving SMU QB door. Eckert has 14 Interceptions and Phillips has 4. Phillips has about 500 yards more in rushing too based primarily on his mobility. I'm not a big fan of a slow, immobile QBs who throws WAY too many Interceptions and turn the ball over. Turnovers beat you-so until Eckert shows that he can protect the football I'll be very skeptical. Of couse, he would look good in the Skull drills. I bet Michigan wished they played Vince Young in the Skull drills and he wasn't supposed to run either. Mobility in your QB is part of the game and is a huge asset in a spread offense.

Of course, Eckert has thrown the ball 3 times as much Phillips in those games, too. And thrown for about 4 times as much yardage. And Eckert's longest completion as a Mustang doubles Phillips'. And, of course, Phillips in those 8 games is yet to throw a touchdown.

Unless you are running Rice's offense, a QB still has to be able to throw the ball.

As psychotic as I am, I still think Romo might be the guy. So I really don't care who of the three wins the job. Like Stallion, I would like the QB carousel of the last several years (it started way before Bennett got here) to end. Of course, I would like it to end by having somebody deserve the job, too.

Let's not forget that if and when the o-line improves to the point that being a QB at SMU is not so similar to having a death wish, playing that position will more closely resemble playing in a Skull drill.

Numbers don't lie:

Texas Tech - SMU, Phillips 12-28-1-109, Eckert 6-9-0-53
Rushing SMU, Phillips 21-75

TCU- PASSING: SMU Mustangs-Eckert, Tony 8-15-2-113; Phillips, Chris 6-14-0-51
Rushing - Eckert, Tony 4-minus 7; Phillips,
Chris 8-minus 9

Okie State - PASSING: SMU-Phillips, Chris 12-19-1-97; Romo, Jerad 3-7-1-25; Eckert, Tony 4-7-0-25.
RuSHING: SMU-Romo, Jerad 6-78; Phillips, Chris 12-52; Eckert, Tony 1-0

San Jose - Passing: SMU Mustangs-Eckert, Tony 8-15-0-91; Romo, Jerad 4-7-0-52;
Rushbrook, Matt 2-2-0-34.

I think it is obvious that our starting qb should be Matt Rushbrook, to bad he graduated. j/k

Hard to tell by these numbers, I will say from the 3 or 4 practices I have seen, I do not understand why Chris is struggling against the Skull defense. He should be tearing it apart.

thank god stallion can read about talent......he certainly cant recognize the lack of it. chris will run third team this next year... if he sticks around. he still cant throw. great athlete..not a QB. he does have the speed and size (now) to be the second TE.
