Crappiest Town in the Big 12.....interesting thread on BaylorFans.com(7 pages long) on which is the crappiest town in the Big 12. At least they admit it. Too bad they didn't have a category "All of the Above" the exception being Austin and probably Boulder. Lubbock so far is battling College Station for bragging rights-I wonder if they have really been to Lubbock-once you get past the dust storms and the stench from the packing plant when the winds blow wrong it ain't so bad-definitely better than the other dumps in the Big 12. I think we ought to give all the recruits visiting this board our considered opinion about what a dump these schools are in.
Waco, Lubbock and College Station are all crap..
What we obtain too cheap.. we esteem too lightly. It is persistence alone that gives everything its value.
I don't know how anyone can consider either College Station or Norman to be a "hip" college town. Both are in the middle of nowhere and the social atmosphere is about as fun as a enima.

Wouldn't it be easier to pick the nicest town in the Big XII? It seems that most of the Big XII towns are dumps.
Just send 'da money.
It's a ten way tie for the crown. With towns like Waco, Ames, Lincoln and Manhattan (the one in Kansas for you Baylor trolls), it is hard to pick the crappiest. If there was a coin flip for the title, Waco should get the privilege to call heads or tails. At least six of the "towns" would not even exist today if a university had not been placed there.
Austin and Boulder are the only ones that get a pass.
The Big XII undoubtedly has the worst college towns of any BCS conference in the nation….Waco, Lubbock, College Station, Lincoln, Stillwater, Norman, Manhattan, even the slightly better cities such as Ames are not attractive to athletes….that is why SMU would flourish in this conference.
Forget football for a moment, Austin, IMO, is the best college town in America. Apparently Forbes, Money and those other magazines that grade out cities agree. Now factor in the football talent of Texas and you really have to wonder why UT hasn’t been a much more dominant team over the past 25 years. I think I have the answer….coaching
If this were "best town in America" I think Austin has a shot. Unfortunately I don't consider it a college town. When you get bigger you get fans of other schools. It's a great town and the college contributes well to the atmosphere, but I don't think it is much of a college town. My definition would be more along the lines of those towns in which would not be there if the college was not there. Towns dependent on the school for survival are towns I consider college towns. I've used Baylor and Waco interchangeably before and people knew who I was talking about. Calling Austin a college town is a little like calling Fort Worth or Dallas a college town because of SMU or TCU. It is a better college town than FW or Big D for sure, but that's because of the sheer size of the University as well as a following because of perennial success. More support to illustrate my point is that Waco is a pile of cow dung because they can't win a football game (a legit d-1 game...ok more than one per season). College Station has prospered because of A&M and I think most (inhabitants) like the country atmosphere. In Norman OKC is 5 minutes north. There is plenty to do in OKC. Not only is OU a Godlike mainstay in Norman, but also in most of the rest of the state. Best college town goes to College Station in the Big 12 with honorable mentions going to Norman, Columbia and Lincoln. Here is my analysis and more method. Kansas sucks....every town. Austin and Boulder have been mentioned. Des Moines...see kansas. Lubbock...the smell is too much for an outsider. Stillwater...kind of like Lubbock. Waco...see above.
If you read this thanks, but please find something better to do with your time. Yes, I will too.
BEST TOWN: My vote goes for Boulder. The Mountains. Tie: Austin. ![]() Eric Dickerson in Pony Excess "I've love winning man, it's like better than losing." - Ebby Calvin "Nuke" LaLoosh
I would have to disagree. Spend a lot of time in any big city -- I don't necessarily mean New York or L.A. or Chicago, but even smaller "big" cities like .... Charlotte, Phoenix, Minneapolis, etc., and you'll see. Austin is a small town with a huge university in the middle of it. And while we're on the Big 12 towns, Lincoln isn't nearly as bad a place as you'd think. Bigger than Austin, I think, and surprisingly cool place to visit.
Actually, that's a good way to find Switzer, too. That said, Stillwater is easily the worst town in the Big 12.
While it's well-off the football atlas where the Big XII (er...XI, this week) is concerned...Lawrence, Kansas, is a bliddy cool town. Burroughs Office Machines dollars & the literary influence of Bill (from said family) has made for a funky little arts & music scene that makes Lawrence feel like a little Austin. 99% of the state is crap & corn, but the northeast corner's pretty picturesque, including the KU campus & its town.
