Play Phillips!

Postby Billy Joe » Mon Sep 19, 2005 4:20 pm

Why in the world did Bennett put in Eckert instead of Phillips? Phillips will be here next season as the likley starter at QB (unless he already has plans to transfer which would not surprise me). Eckert had his chance and did not perform against Baylor. He also threw too many interceptions last season when he did play. At least let the younger QBs get game experience for next year. Another moronic Bennett moment on the Hilltop.

OU just moved there QB that started the season to wide out to get him on the field. If Phillps isn't going to play QB why not do the same. I here that we really like Justin Wills at QB for next year.

yeah well the guy they really liked this year went 0-11 to start the season, and the guy they liked before Phillips was probably the worst QB in SMU history. Once again-many of you people are so damn gullible. So that's the plan-open up Bennett's make or break 6th season with a inexperienced freshman. And the Beat goes on. My confidence in Phil Bennett's ability to gauge QBs either in recruiting or at the Division 1A level could not be lower.

Just because they really like Willis doesn't mean the guy is going to move up in the scheme of things ahead of Phillips.

And, what, you want to move Phillips to WR so that we have a RS frosh starting and no experience backing him up?

Eckert and Romo both got tons of votes for captain from the other players. If Phillips was so far above those guys, they would not have received those kinds of votes.

My best guess? They are going to try and get an extra red-shirt out of Phillips by claiming this year as a redshirt year and last year as a medical redshirt, or vice-versa.

I would also be willing to bet that they bring in another JUCO QB this year to compete with Phillips in the spring. That way we don't have a RS-FR a snap away from playing, and keep the team a bit more mature. I also wouldn't be surprised if that JUCO QB is a pocket passer and we have the same situation this year, where the new guy = Exkert and Phillips = Romo.

Other than the INT, Romo played a very solid game on Saturday, and there is no reason not to play him as our starter right now.

If Chris is as good as Stallion thinks, one has to believe there is an issue that no one knows:

classroom
'tape' room
weight room
effort in practice

IMO, there is something happening or NOT happening which is restricting his snaps. Like the earlier post said, the players voted for both Eckert & Romo as captains. You can't fool the players-- all the BS stops at the locker room door.

If Justin Willis lines up under center for you next year then you are really in trouble.

I am surprised that it took until monday for this thread to start. At the time my feeling was to put Phillips in but I guess it is early in the season and you still want to keep Eckert as an option.

Wow, Tate as captian! That's really cold to point that out.

right now Willis is the QB of the future..

I talked to to someone who is on the inside and they said that Willis begged burns to give him a playbook as soon as he signed and he studied w/ his coach at Denton Ryan, Joey Florence probably the 2nd best coach in the metroplex next to Dodge, all spring and came into summer camp already know %50 of the offense...
Note that he basically ran the same offense in high school, albeit not as complicated.. but he knows the basics and the fundamentals. Plus he has been a film nut since he got here....

Phillips wasn't going to beat A$M. Obviously he is not in the plan for this year, for whatever reason. Who knows about next year?

Romo impressed me Saturday. The receivers didn't exactly help his cause. The problem this year is not QB play. I would dare say that Romo has done an excellent job so far.

Also on the Willis topic, I noticed at the TCU game when Romo would come off the field, he would go to the bench have a quick chat with the coaches etc. and as soon as he sat down Willis was there asking him questions. Good to see him taking some fortitude and getting things done.

I keep reading these arguments to put Phillips in. I don't know the kid but it seems to me the coaching staff has seen him everyday for three years and that includes two different coordinators. Considering the state of the program I would bet they would put anybody on the field that would have the potential to give them a win. Phillips is probably the most athletic QB we have, but does anyone know if he can really use it and that includes the mental aspect as well, the most yardage production I've really have seen him do in the last three years is drop back and then tuck it and run. We've all known kids with unbelievable ability but as they move up the ladder what got them by in high school does not always translate to college when the talents starts to level, you can only out athlete the other team for a short time.

Secondly, why isn't he playing another position? If his abilities are what are advertised we sure could have used a big athletic kid at receiver, safety, LB .... there have been lots of holes to fill. I just bet there is alot more to the story then we know.

I've seen this same claim from 4 different people now. I dont know why I have to explain this every year, but this cant be done. You have 5 years to play 4 seasons. You cant take a non-medical redshirt after a medical. You dont just keep getting extra years. The only redshirt Phillips could get for last season was a medical, because he played in 3 games.

The only time anyone can petition for a 6th year is when they miss 2 consecutive full seasons due to seperate injuries. I know the thought running through alot of peoples minds now is "Hey, we can fake an injury..... wouldnt that be slick!" But it would never work. Phillips injury last year wasnt major. He never had surgery, and was still practicing. He practices every day now, and has dressed out for every game. There is no way a petition for another injury year would succeed, so just give it up.

I imagine you're not going to believe me, since I've said the same thing a dozen times and it always seems to be forgotten 5 minutes later. The NCAA has the rules posted on their website, read them sometime.

Just for emphasis I'm going to repeat this. You CANT take a non-medical redshirt after a medical redshirt.
Try not to choke on the Kool-Aid.
