Attendance Booster Question???

Postby LawSchoolPony » Sun Oct 16, 2005 8:01 pm

Is it against NCAA rules to have a concert after a football game? Why couldn't SMU bring in a band to play after the game so that people would buy tickets to see the band and in turn be at the game (and counted towards attendance totals)?

I know I saw Pat Green play after a Mavs game. Would Ford Stadium be suitable for such an endeavor? What about a christian band - after all we have Methodist heritage, and we could get all the youth groups to turn out?

Just a thought, I have no idea if its even allowed...

Strippers at the 50 yard line. That would at least get the guys out.

It would also probably violate sound ordinances in the Park Cities and the City of Dallas.

They did this once and it tanked big time.

Not a bad idea at all, but they just went about it in all the wrong ways.
-They got a Christian band. Doesn't bother me, but I'd never even heard of them. I guess they marketed to area churches, etc
-It was held in MOODY! I'm sure most of the people that went to the concert never even stepped foot in Ford Stadium.

Get a decent name, and put it in the actual football stadium. Maybe do a "preview show" at halftime with a little stage midfield and the mustang band playing backup stuff. Then have the real stage and all the big stuff set up on the grassy knoll for after the game. The right act is the key to this going well.

Add a name/group to the list.

1. Chicago
2. The Beach Boys
3. The Doobie Brothers
4.
5.
6.

Jimmy Buffett would be probably the biggest coup of all time...that'd cost a hell of a lot to get him out there.

Beach Boys aren't that bad of an idea. Mike Love is like only original member, and they seem to play anywhere and everywhere. I went to a Mavs game once in the last year at Reunion, and there was an announcement to "pick up your wristbands for the beach boys concert after the game." Keep in mind we paid about 5 bucks each to get in, and the place was almost empty near the end of the game. My friend and I went to this folding table set up in the concourse, and a lady sitting there gave us wristbands and told us to go down on the court after the game was over. We ended up being at the very front of the stage, maybe a few thousand people stayed for the concert. They played an entire 1 1/2 hour long concert and I had a blast.

Maybe tap the program council budget, and let them co-run it. They usually bring in a pretty decent name act for the Block Party/Mane Event/Peruna's Birthday show in the spring. Throw a decent concert in Ford, and make it a yearly tradition. Homecoming, family weekend, the TCU game, and the "concert game". Get a sponsor, make it a huge deal.

that music would increase our senior citizen attendance, so it may be worth a shot since the younger crowd seems not to show....

I agree w/ MustangSally, I really think that if it was done correctly, w/ a big enough band, and marketed with enough energy, it would be a big success, and we could have a big turnout regardless of who we were playing. The extra ticket sales would hopefully offset the cost of the band. Hey, its worth a shot.

might there be a possibility of problems with HP/UP noise ordinaces? I would think that if a game was ok a concert would be as well, but you never know.
The donkey's name is Kiki.

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney?

Sadly, the games don't draw a large enough crowd to violate the noise ordinance for the Park Cities/Dallas. Wouldn't it be nice if they did?

Let's drop down to Division 1-AA or Division II and it won't matter how many people come to the games. The attendance at the ECU game was an embarrassment. It was an embarrassment to the SMU fans that showed up and to the whole damn athletic department. What an absolute joke of a football program SMU is running. I do applaud the effort of the players. It is a shame they have a QB who is too scared to run the ball anymore. Bench Romo and start Phillips!
