Jim Harbaugh???

Postby anurep » Tue May 30, 2006 12:20 pm

Some yahoo on A&M's rival website posted a summary of a conversation he had with Jim Harbaugh at the Indy 500 in which Harbaugh stated that he was offerred the Rice head coaching job but turned it down and that SMU had approached him about coming next year. Jim stated that the person from SMU said this was the current regime's last year. Interesting but I think Jim drank too much this weekend. If you have access, its an entertaining read if nothing else.

"Hey, Jim, if we suck next year, would you t to coach here in 2007? Shhhh... don't tell anyone about this conversation."

That sounds reasonable.

Harbaugh was a prime candidate for the Rice job.

We're not replacing Coach Bennett after he leads us to a bowl game this year!

Jim has done a good job at U. of San Diego, but it is a Div 1AA school. Stretch?

And Ponygirl, nice comment. A bowl would eliminate the necessity to discuss options.

We are just preparing incase we suck next year. This is a good thing.

I say less than 7 wins, or a loss to UNT at any record, and bennett should be out.

Geez, anurep is already starting with speculation about Bennett's replacement and we're just under 100 days before the season even starts. Let's wait until he loses a few games that you thought we should have won before you start talking about replacements. This is the time of the year when we're all undefeated and can dream of great things. Once the season starts we'll either be giddy with the great season the Mustangs are having, or cursing our bad luck, bad coaching, or bad officiating.

East, I can't say I agree with you here. He is just letting everyone know what he saw on another page. He even comments that he thinks Jim must have had too much to drink. The Ponies will be great this year, all this will be irrelavent and we will have a laugh at Jims expense when it is all said and done.

if harbaugh actually said that -

that is probably one of the most UNPROFESSIONAL things anyone could say -

in other words, who wants someone like that???

it appears you're only asking for trouble!!!

Even if SMU -- or someone with a connection to SMU -- HAD held a conversation, no coach worth having would have shared such a conversation with some random fan at the Indy 500. I'm guessing that while he might have been a viable candidate at Rice, the rest of this is unadulterated BS. Coach Bennett is doing the job, and doing it the right way, building from the ground up (loading up on young players, redshirting as many as possible, etc.) This whole conversation is moot.

Sorry if I jumped in too soon. But when I hear that sort of comment, it just ticks me off when by all indications we are looking an improved season and this recruiting season is actually better early on than last year. Last year I don't think we had our first committment until fall. So, the buzz is out there. Let's not mess it up by making random rumors allegedly heard by a drunken Aggie from a drunken ex-coach at a drunken Indy 500. Repeat after me, "Bennett is doing the right things to build the program long term, we're making strides in the right direction, we're going to be better this year." That should be the party line until after the first game of the season, then you can get your shivs out.

Sounds like pure BS. Either Harbaugh is trying to 'leak' information to up his stock or our brand spanking new AD has sure been busy. Somehow I just don't believe Orsini has already sent out feelers for a new football coach. Copeland has had other things more important to deal with than checking on Harbaugh's status.

I'm guessing it was an attempt at humor by an Aggie who spent a little too much time out in the sun.
