Your penance is that a Longhorn gets to give you crap about it. ![]() ![]() Official Cult of Chris Phillips Member
He didn't answer my question.
Tim, I am a big fan. You are way better than Woody Paige on ESPN. Are you involved in the conspiracy at the Dallas Morning News to marginalize SMU football? In other words, is Belo a puppet for UT's desire to dominate DFW recruiting? Willis to slot receiver!

I can already tell you what Colishaw's answer will be (if he decides to answer that question):
"SMU has done plenty in the past 20 years to marginalize its own football program. They do not need any help from me or anyone else that is part of the Belo Empire. Also, Texas does not need any help from Belo to 'dominate DFW recruiting.' All Mack needs to do is flash his National Championship ring, let the kids see the facilities and tell them how many Saturdays they will be playing on TV and the deal is sealed." Seriously guys - this whole "Dallas Morning News is out to get us" thing is getting tiresome. What have we done that warrants coverage? When the Rangers or the Mavericks have bad years, they are relegated to page 6C of SportsDay. We have the best beat writer we have had in the past 20 years (Calvin) - if the DMN was really out to get us, we wouldn't even have a beat writer - why would the spend money on that. If Coach B and the football team win 6 or 7 games this year and we earn a bowl bid, we will get coverage.
What gets tiresome is this: 'when we do something worth covering, we'll get coverage.'
The wins over UAB, Houston, TCU and UTEP all rated top billing in SMU's hometown paper last season. We didn't get it. Sure, Mack can flash his ring ... NOW. Where the DMN helped UT tremendously was over that last ten years, roughly the minute the SWC went away. That's when they turned their attention to winning UT a national championship, and pushed SMU to the back.
That is a bold statement. Do you care to back that up with any facts? Do you think the Orlando Sentinel gives more coverage to Central Florida over Florida, Florida State and Miami just because Central Florida is the "home town team"? I am pretty certain that the number of DMN subscribers that are Texas or A&M alums far outnumber SMU alums. The paper has to appeal to its subscriber base, which is what they are doing by covering UT and A&M. If SMU was turning out 8,000-10,000 graduates per year, and many of them settled in Dallas, the DMN would accomodate that large readership base.
Well, I think that validates the theory that whoever buys the papers gets the coverage. There are a helluva lot of Sooners in Dallas.
