Patterson interested in Bomar

TCU coach Gary Patterson said he would be interested in adding former Oklahoma quarterback Rhett Bomar to the Horned Frogs' roster , but conceded much needs to take place before Bomar could join another team.

"Who in the United States wouldn't be interested in Rhett Bomar as a player?" Patterson said. "We have question marks. You need to have patience in these situations.

"You'd like for him to come up and take a look at the place. We have a scholarship available, and we have an opening at quarterback."

Chad Huffman was expected to be the backup to senior starting quarterback Jeff Ballard this season as a junior, but left the team after being selected in the second round of the amateur draft by the San Diego Padres.

Next season, TCU will start a sophomore or redshirt freshman if the roster remains as is.

Bomar and his roommate, offensive lineman J.D. Quinn, were dismissed from the Sooners earlier this week after an internal investigation revealed they received excessive payments for their work at a Norman-area car dealership.

Each will have to repay the money they illegally received in the form of charitable donations, then apply for reinstatement from the NCAA.

Any player who transfers to another Division I-A team is required by the NCAA to sit out an academic year.

Bomar will have two years of eligibility remaining if his eligibility is restored by the NCAA.

But even if their eligibility is restored, that doesn't make Bomar and Quinn locks for TCU.

Patterson, who said he also has interest in Quinn, said more information is needed from Oklahoma and the NCAA.

Also, Bomar pleaded guilty to being a minor in possession of alcohol in March, and Quinn was arrested in November on suspicion of drunken driving.

Both were in good academic standing before their dismissals.

"With any young man that comes to TCU, it isn't what the head football coach thinks," Patterson said. "It's what the university thinks, starting with the chancellor."

Neither Bomar nor his father, Jerry, returned phone calls Friday, but Texas A&M-Commerce issued a release that said the football team has asked Oklahoma for permission to talk to Bomar about transferring.

Quinn's father, Jim, said his son would be interested in TCU. Jim Quinn played linebacker at TCU in the 1970s.

Defense starts strong

Seven-on-seven is a drill for the offense. Quarterbacks learn to read coverages and receivers refine their route-running.

But TCU's defense shined during the seven-on-seven portion of the Frogs' first practice of camp.

It's not usual at any school to find the defense ahead of the offense early in camp.

But the defense was proud of its performance, especially after showing only one coverage.

"Our goal is just to stop them, don't let them get too many yards," safety Marvin White said. "If we get an interception, it means we won. That's a big lift for us, knowing it's an offensive drill."

Does anyone else see the irony of a Froggie condoning illegal activity - especially if it allows TCU to profit from it - and still slamming SMU for what happened in the 1980s that lead to the Mustangs getting the DP?

In today's paper, Patterson acknowledged that the banished quarterback has expressed interest in transferring to TCU. TCU will also have to investigate Bomar's two episodes of under-age drinking. If he transfers, it's likely that Bomar will have to undergo what all TCU students found guilty of under-age drinking go through -- mandatory alcohol counseling. TCU is one of only a handful of institutions in the nation that note this punishmnt for under-age drinking. The institution takes this issue very seriously. If anybody can get Rhett Bomar back on a straight path, TCU may well be the one.

activities, the NCAA gave the Mustangs their second chance. What if

Isn't it a violation of NCAA rules for an institution or coach to discuss a recruiting target? Yes, these circumstances are unusual, but they are not unprecedented. How is this not a violation of NCAA rules?
