North Texas--Fire the Coach Game

Postby Billy Joe » Tue Sep 05, 2006 9:37 am

I believe the North Texas game is a fire the coach game. It is a must win for SMU. If SMU cannot beat N. Texas then what does that say about this team for the rest of the year. This game is important if SMU is going to have a winning season. If SMU loses this game, it will give Orsani a justifiable excuse to get rid of Bennett. The heat is on....

Why limit ourselves to a ‘fire the coach game’? Why not have ‘fire the coach plays’? We could have the coach fired on certain offensive plays and certain defensive plays. For a tie breaker, we could use special teams fire the coach plays. Geez, the possibilities are unlimited.

We just played a very worthy opponent with a very high talent level. We didn't win but we didn't get beat up (injuries which usually happens when we are overmanned) and we did have some strong points. The next 4 games will be a better gauge of this team than the TTU game. Give the ‘fire the coach’ battle cry a rest.

What next, have the Mustang band march onto the field shouting “F-I-R-E-B-E-N-N-E-T-T” before playing the Battle cry?

Yes, and if we win against UNT then Sam Houston is a must win, then Arkansas State, then Tulane, then...

Seriously give the guy a break. I expected Tech to destory us by 50, we came out of there 35-3. I've seen measurable improvement of out team the last several years. Now at least we're in every game, have the chance to win and expect to. People need to realize that some things take time.

Absolutely -- back off. The argument could have been made that Tulane was a FtC game last year, but it wasn't and shouldn't have been. I realize you want to show you're back in mid-season pot-stirring form, but knock it off. Let the team get used to Willis, Lowery, McCann, Morstead, and the other new faces, and let' see what we have.

See everyone (except Philly Joe, I assume) in Denton.

Ah, the people who give up on a season after one game crack me up.

3 points and less than 200 yards of offense......hard to say anything is getting better.

Let's start by winning at UNT.

Besides, getting clobbered by UT was as allowable as us getting beaten by Tech. Doesn't tell us much about UNT, and it sounds from some folks like they might have a quarterback to go with Damario Thomas. Maybe they won't be a pushover at all. And Arkansas State scares me -- not that disciplined, but extremely fast and athletic, a team that can make you pay for any mistakes.

The next four are not layups, nor should they be viewed that way. They're winnable, for sure, but not guaranteed by any stretch of the imagination.

It was hard to say anything was getting better last year after we jumped the tracks against Tulane, too -- remember the outcries (of course you do) calling for Coach Bennett's job? Then he won five games, three straight at the end of the season, 4-1 against bowl teams? He's a good coach, and it's a damn good thing his players don't quit as easily as some fans do.

Please. SMU fumbled twice in the red zone (only once as a turnover). They also missed a field goal. I know that's cause for alarm. However, because they weren't forced turnovers, those kinds of things can and will improve as the season goes on. The game was not as bad as the score indicated. I think SMU can take a lot away from that game, most notably the fact that no one got hurt.

What would UT have done to us?

Postby Sam I Am » Tue Sep 05, 2006 11:51 am

I shudder to think how much UT would have beaten us if we had played them instead of Tech. We should be better than UNT, but we don't have any gimme games yet. SMU is still rebuilding and hardly ever be a BIG favorite until we win consistently over certain rivals, and that hasn't happened since 1986.

Guess what - we didn't play Texas, TCU, Army or Oklahoma. We will know how we match up the NTSU on Sat. Why don't we let the schedule play out some before we get too carried away with who beat whom by how much and therefore SMU stinks.

doesn't care who wins.
