We made a Top 10 listRanking the state's NCAA Division I-A programs, with comments by Kevin Sherrington:
1. Texas: Mack Brown lists winning state title as one of his annual goals 2. TCU: Not sure Gary Patterson thinks this is high enough 3. Texas Tech: If only they weren't as soft as Mike Leach says they are 4. Texas A&M: Dennis Franchione is going to have to do better than this 5. UTEP: And some of you thought El Paso was in New Mexico 6. Houston: Kevin Kolb gives the Cougars the edge over the Bears 7. Baylor: Still trying to find their swagger 8. North Texas: Where have you gone, Booger Kennedy? 9. Rice: Still getting over the Wishbone 10. SMU: At least there's Sam Houston
My letter to Kevin Sherrington, who is a friend of mine and a guy who I generally highly respect (he beats the heck out of Cowlishaw, but that's another subject):
"I gotta say something on your Texas Top 10. You’ve completely misranked the Mustangs and seem to have forgotten that last year they beat five of the seven teams above them on your list that they played. Ok, the TCU game was a miracle. But so was North Texas’ win over the Ponies this year. You will be proven wrong on this, Kevin."
Because we beat five of the seven teams on the list we played. You need some reading comprehension help.
Look, I'm not suggesting moving us up into top 5 territory. But we're clearly not the bottom of the list. I've got us at 8. Texas, TCU, Tech, and the Aggies are in a different league. You've then got UTEP (who we beat), Houston (who we beat), and Baylor (who we lost to). Next is us followed by Rice and North Texas.
Based on this year's results, #10 is about right as we have yet to beat a Div 1-A team. Against 1-A competition, we have averaged 9 points while giving up over 35 points per game. What happened last year is in the past...........
Sherrington shows his idiocy once again. I'm not claiming we should be at the top of the list, but we damn-sure shouldn't be at the bottom.
I can't stand columnists who share opinions about teams and events they've never seen. I'm willing to bet he hasn't been to a game with SMU, Rice, North Texas or Baylor in years. Probably not even the over-ranked Froggy High games, either, and it's not like that's a far drive. It's like me giving my ranking of HS teams. I don't go to games, I don't know the teams and coaches, and I don't care. But I've got a computer, so I could write with as much expertise on HS football as Sherrington has on most of the colleges on that list. HOORAY, BEER!
Then why not take it out 20 years, 15 years, 10 years or 5 years-we'd be Dead Last in all those scenarios. PonyBoy you've been delusional since you were a PonyToddler and I'm sure you'll be delusional when you are a PonyGrandPapi. Here is a stat for you. SMU does not have a winning record against ANY of those programs in the last 20 years or the last 10 years.
Where do you think early-season rankings come from? Take the best player away from any team, and you'd think that team would drop. But even though Vince Young went pro, last year's performance showed the talent coming back. Yes, last year is in the past, but it's the only starting point there is when evaluating this year's teams, at least in the early going. HOORAY, BEER!
PonyGrandpapi is what we Akansans use as a sandwich spread when we want to be classy.
Who cares? Maybe the article will wake up this piss-poor administration and motivate the team to start playing better. When was the last time we actually had a winning season? One or two in the last few decades. SMU deserves to be ranked last. Period. I will tell you this....Orsini has his work cut out for him....remember he came here talking a big game and his you know what will get called out and ripped by me if he does not deliver. I am sick and tired of being the whipping boys of college football.
For my money (and context and intended target aside) the funniest post I have seen from Stallion in the several years I have read this board. ![]()
Stallion, I rarely agree with you because so much of the constant negativity of your posts, but your spot on. Last is where find ourselves!
I've been on suicide watch since Lubbock--it bought a wall sized mirror for my home office. I love Phil Bennett, but Coach Bennett has got to go! He played not to lose by a wide margin in Lubbock, the team knew he didn't trust them and they gave up on him in Denton. Now we see that TCU and UTEP didn't play it that way. They actually thought that their teams had a chance and their coaches gave them the opportunity. Phil gave up on his team. I don't buy the "redshirt" freshman agument--look how many major programs started quarterbacks that were true freshman, redshirt freshman and sophomores. Offence sells tickets, obvioulsy winning is even more effective. But offense also brings in the recruits. A look at recruiting for this year and we are not going anywhere. Unfortunately Bennett laid a big egg this year with his bowl talk. I would even swap coaches with A$M, what a Aggie joke that would be.
