Sky is falling alertWe need to win 3 out of the next 4 to make a bowl. 6-6 will not cut it. No bowl will take us with that record. We recently went 3 out of 4 this season but the competition has now improved substantially.
Willis is doing all he can. The D is obviously the problem and has been but Willis has been able to overcome it until last Saturday. UAB is a team we can beat. We will have trouble stopping Houston but their D is suspect also. Could be a shootout. Tulsa is a solid team. Rice is a wildcard. I don't know how we can 3-4 out of that but it is possible. I'm trying my best to be a sunshiner. Good day.
You are right that no bowl in their right mind would choose us at 6-6 but we still have a decent shot of them having no choice in the matter. This all depends on ECU, if they make it to 6-6 we are toast, no matter what our record is. Even at 7-5, ECU would probably be picked over us at 6-6 because they beat us and they travel much better than us.
So, it really depends on them as much as us. We need to get to at least 6-6 and hope they don't make it. Womack + Wishbone = Heisman
Class of 89
If we get Bowl Eliglbe, the chips will just have to fall as they may... bowl or no bowl . . . 6-6 is a huge step for this program
Sports, and all that implies.
yes and no. I think 5-6 last year might be better than 6-6 this year. Last year we played tougher teams and beat TCU. This year we had wins against Sam Houston St. and Ark State. I see 6-6 this year as not improving or getting any worse (even with the d@mn loss to UNT). But watching Willis and Co. has been more entertaining then some of the past years. The only reason why I this might be an imporvement is because in two back to back seasons we are around .500 Hopefully we get past that mark
6-6 with wins over Ark St, SHSU, Marshall, Tulane, ___, ____ would not be a huge step to me. We went 5-6 last season with a SIGNIFICANTLY better schedule. Adding a D-1AA team to last years schedule and we are 6-6 there as well with a stronger schedule. In spite of the improvements on offense (which are very apparent), I cannot look at a 6-6 record and say that we made any big steps from last season. One step foward two steps back as they say...
I posted before I saw this ponydawg. Agreed on everything you have said above.
I think 6-6 and we will get a bowl bid. from who i have no idea and do not care . . a bowl game is a bowl game at this point. If I had enough money I would put my companies name on a Stadium and invite the ponies every year!!!
Sports, and all that implies.
All you people who think SMU is assured of a bowl berth at 6-6...were you born yesterday? First of all, what is your analysis based on? If it rests on the "feel good story of the year" theory, you don't know what you're talking about. The football watching world doesn't care about SMU or the DP 20 years ago. Money talks and bs walks...we have one of the WORST attendance rates of all C-USA schools. If they don't have to take us, they more than likely won't.
Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
That is the point. Unless the media is willing to fill the stadium with its subscribers, the story means nothing. Bowls need to have a certain attendance or they no longer exist. SMU does not travel. That is a killing combination. The media will gladly write the story if we get to a bowl, but it will not cause anyone to choose us over a travelling team. We get a bowl only if we get one of the tie ins or if we are 8-4 since we would have beaten Tulsa and Houston.
I have a chart. Oooooooooo, a chart. Yes, a chart where I am tracking wins and losses, teams still in contention for a bowl game. I haven't posted it yet, because it isn't very interesting and doesn't reveal much.
There are 64 bowl invitations. There are 25 bowl eligible teams right now. Leaving 39 up for grabs. There are 24 five-win teams. There are 13 other teams above .500. There are 12 teams @ .500 (11 at 4-4; one at 3-3). There are only 21 teams that are 2-6 or worse. I look at the chart and have a hard time believing a 6-6 SMU team is going to a bowl game. There will be some 6-6 teams in bowl games, but they will be from BCS conferences.
How many 6 win teams did not go to a bowl last year? and there is no "analysis" on this, just opinions . . .calm down BRStang
Sports, and all that implies.
I believe there were 10 bowl eligible teams that did not go to bowls last year. Not all had just six wins, btw. Keep in mind there are four new bowls.
