Bryce Hudman to start on Tuesday

Postby mavsrage311 » Tue Oct 24, 2006 11:31 pm

Randal Goode being benched

I always thought he was more of a strong safety, but I suppose our pass defense can't be any worse

Bennett made mention of that in the press conference.

I like this call, sorry for Goode though.

Hudman is the future in the secondary along with McCann and Crosby.

Hudman plays hard and never quits...

Coach Bennett talked about how Hudman has exceptional closing speed, and when he sees a play unfold, he gets there as fast as anyone. Hopefully, that speed and athleticism will manifest itself in the form of about a dozen tackles and a takeaway against UAB.

This is an interesting move. Goode has been the weakest spot on defense all year, but again, isn't Hudman a strong saftey?

So, either:

1) UAB is primarily a running team, so essentially playing two SS is not a bad thing.

or

2) Hudman has the ability to play FS, which would be huge. Tyler Jones, IMHO looked like he has the ability to be a great SS, it would be nice if those two aren't at the same position.

I don't know if I agree that Goode has been the weak link this year -- he's played pretty well in a couple of the home games. But I've wondered about Tyler Jones -- he's supposed to be a terrific athlete. KJ Ellis also is a guy whose teammates seem to have a lot of good things to say about. I wonder if Hudman's wheels would make him an ideal FS candidate, and if Ellis, who looks a little stronger, might be able to step in next year for Sturdivant at SS.

My brother and I both faced Hudman in high school, when he moonlighted as a running back. The kid can hit, no two ways about it.

I have a problem with saying Goode has been the weak link on defense this year. The secondaryas a whole, save sturdivant, has been the weak link.

K.J. Ellis was on scholarship at Texas Tech and actually enrolled- I previously posted about his performance in the Tech spring game. Therefore, he is not eligible this year.

Right - I meant next year, after Sturdivant and Goode graduate.

I don't know that any team will work in the run against SMU if they can pass on them like ECU did..

goode has definitely not been the weak spot in our defense. that spot my friends has been the cornerbacks by far. everything else in our defense in my mind is near or up to par. we just need some monster cornerbacks and we'll be set

We'll be set? Just for the sake of argument, let's say SMU signs the four best cornerbacks in the country in February, including one or two JUCOs. Suddenly we have a group of CBs that can hang with any WRs in the country. However, we'll lose to graduation three of four strong defensive linemen, meaning there's no assurance (until we see what the back-ups who replace them can do) that we'll have a significant pass rush. No pass rush means even the best CBs will look ordinary.

If you have monster dlinemen, the depth at those position have to work harder to have a chance, so in theory the backups are strong enough to hold it down. Don't kid yourself, monster CBs would help our defense [secondary] significantly.
