The latest 'rumor' out of Denton...

Postby MrMustang1965 » Thu Dec 14, 2006 2:23 am

...is that Sam Houston State QB Rhett Bomar (formerly of the University of Oklahoma) will transfer to the University of North Texas so that he can play for newly-hired head coach Todd Dodge.

What the heck are they smokin' up there in Denton these days?

Let the car-related jokes begin.

"Bomar won't play for a Dodge. But he might consider a Cadillac!"

If that is true, I doubt Bomar will make that much difference.

How many years of eligibilty does he have left. I know that right know he has 2 years left. So if he transfers back to a D-I A school, does that mean he loses a year???

I would think that the year he spent down in SHSU would count. If he doesnt transfer from D1 to D1 I dont think he has to sit out again. But dont worry Im sure that we will have 10 guys on here quoting the ncaa rule book to us verbatim.

If he can't remember that handouts from car dealerships are illegal, do you really think he can learn Dodge's offense?

I really don't think he can run the same offense that Dodge wants...but who knows.

5 to play 4

1 Redshirt
2 Played at OU
3 transferred to SHSU (1-aa) -

He COULD Have played this year technically, but was ineligible per NCAA rules (he's a cheater).

Did he actually enroll? If not, then he might still have this year back, but if he did not, then he'd have to sit out at UNT next year because it would be a 1-A to 1-A transfer. It is probably better if he enrolled, then he can re-transfer back up.

NOTE: After this semester, he is eligible for the NFL draft (I'm just saying...)

re-transfer to UNT:

4 can play if eligible
5 can play if eligible

Not sure about that. Had the conversation with someone about this situation, and then I saw a player that did just this: played 1a then transfered to 1aa then transfered to 1a never sat out.

Bomar coming from a Division 1A school never established his one year residency at his new Division 1A school so he would have to sit out. This is different from a Division 1AA player simply transferring to a Division 1A school. I thought they changed that rule too anyway.

I have no basis or reason to doubt you but I just do not understand. The kid left school, has been out of football for a year, can he not go back to a 1A school and play, or would that interpretation be too simple for the NCAA?

Has he been reinstated by the NCAA??? If not then why would they allow this year to count as his sit-out year?

You are correct. From the SHSU web site, dated Nov. 1, 2006:

HUNTSVILLE - Rhett Bomar, who transferred to Sam Houston State University from the University of Oklahoma in August, will be eligible to play quarterback for the Bearkats for the 2007 season, the NCAA reinstatement staff announced today.

The NCAA handed down a one-year suspension for Bomar for rules violations at Oklahoma. The Grand Prairie product passed for 2,018 yards and 10 touchdowns as a freshman quarterback for the Sooners in 2005. He was been practicing with the Bearkat football team this fall waiting to hear on his reinstatement petition.

“Our concern at this time is for Rhett Bomar and his family. After more than two months of uncertainly, we are ready to bring closure to this situation,” Sam Houston State Director of Athletics Bobby Williams said. “After the initial reactions to the NCAA’s decision have been considered, we will leave it up to Rhett when and if he wishes to speak publicly about his situation. Since Rhett choose to come to Sam Houston State, our goal has been to do everything we can to assist Rhett in continuing his education and athletic career.”

The 6-2, 215 pound quarterback, earned “Most Valuable Player” honors in last year’s Holiday Bowl where he led the Sooners to victory over Oregon. Bomar led Oklahoma to victories over Kansas State, Kansas, Baylor, Nebraska, Texas A&M, and Oklahoma State during the regular season. Bomar has two years of eligibility remaining and will be able to play for Sam Houston State in both 2007 and 2008.

“Rhett has fit in well with the team here at Sam Houston,” Bearkat head coach Todd Whitten said. “Obviously, we would have liked for him to able to play in games this season. But, with his experience working with the squad this fall and spring training ahead next year, we look forward to having him as a Bearkat for the next two seasons.”

“I am happy to get this behind me. I look forward to having the opportunity to represent Sam Houston State,” Bomar said. “Right now, my top priority is seeing this team win some football games. This decision today will help take the focus off me and put the focus on the team.”

Not so fast my friends. I have it from a reliable source that Chase Wassan will be headed up North. You see, Chase will be graduating this Spring from Texas State and still has one year of eligibility left. Being as he has graduated he can transfer up and not sit out a year. Yes, he has only one year left but as the past shows he is pretty adept to the system and has had some success. Who knows, maybe so and maybe no.
