ESPN: Most Intriguing Games for 2007 - Texas Tech v SMU

Postby MrMustang1965 » Tue Jul 03, 2007 12:26 pm

ESPN's Mark Schlabach says circle Sept. 3rd. Hmmmm.....

Texas Tech at SMU, Sept. 3 (4 p.m., ESPN)

Before the Tennessee Titans used the "Music City Miracle" to beat the Buffalo Bills in the 2000 NFL playoffs, SMU used the exact same play to defeat Texas Tech and remain undefeated during the 1982 season. The Mustangs, led by running backs Eric Dickerson and Craig James, were ranked No. 2 in the country with a 9-0 record. But with 17 seconds to go, the Red Raiders kicked a field goal to tie the score at 27-27. Texas Tech tried to squib the kickoff to run out the clock, but Blane Smith fielded the football after bobbling it. He turned and fired a pass across the field to Bobby Leach, who ran 91 yards down the sideline for a game-winning touchdown. The Pony Express won the game, 34-27, and the play became known as the "Miracle on Fourth Avenue." SMU tied Arkansas the following week to win the Southwest Conference title and then beat Pittsburgh (and quarterback Dan Marino) 7-3 in the Cotton Bowl. The Mustangs finished 11-0-1 and No. 2 in the country. Five years later, SMU received the death penalty from the NCAA. A quarter-century later, the Mustangs are still recovering from one of the harshest penalties in college sports history.

I think this could make for a very interesting game. I'm considering skipping the season opener for Texas for this one (I know, shocking).

Nice to see any mention that gets more people watching SMU football.

Shouldn't come as a total surprise that the game is on that list, though, since it's a handy reminder to all of the ESPN.com readers that they should tune in to ESPN to watch the game on ESPN....

You might want to rethink that... I know you got a degree from UT and all, but, uh, you can go to both games, as they are on two different days. Heck, there's even a full "travel" day in between 'em!

But yes, I do approve of the sentiment. And if you were thinking of rolling with me, I don't know when I am going to Dallas, I might go up on Friday, but probably will head up on Sunday so I can enjoy copious free beer and a day of college football/people watching at the HornFans tent. Don't have any interest in actually going to the Texas game, mind you. Just the free beer, and the fact that HornFans has gone HD helps. I would stay home otherwise... have I mentioned that I have a complete geek crush on my new (to me) HD?

Oh of course, if someone saunters by and happens to offer me a ticket for free I might saunter in for the first half... well actually this game will be over ten minutes into the first quarter... so maybe I'd stay into the second quarter.

Hey before any of you jump on my case - I am a huge college football fan in a town with a huge college football team. Granted it may have been my most hated team up until I moved here - but still, it wouldn't matter where I lived - I would go to Div 1A college football games, no matter what. Maybe not Miami, but I would never live in Miami.

I had a dream last night that we beat Tech 90-10. We took a knee on their 2 yard line to end the game.
It's a crappy job but someone's gotta do it.

I said it was a dream. That same night I also dreamed that a penguin was giving me a back massage while wearing a Santa Claus outfit. :P

That's a dream I wouldn't want to wake up from... the second part... not so much.
