a different way of asking the questionI don't need any names, any leads or anything specific. I just want to know what the hell we are waiting for really? This 'good things come in time' theory sounds all nice but not in the world of college athletics and recruiting they don't. Time is of the essence no matter what you think. Case in point: Navy has a new coach already. They didn't jack around, they knew what they wanted and hired it from within. They have leadership for their players, clarity of the future for the young players with options, and a better chance to recruit and not lose a year. This is not that much rocket science of a process. There is not one magic candidate for SMU. If there was, we might as well shut it down because the genius Paul Johnson went elsewhere. Pick 3 realistic candidates who fit the job, who want a head job and make offers. If they are realistic, one will accept i guarantee it, otherwise your list wasn't right to begin with. If a guy is slow playing us and holding up the process, I say bullcrap, call his bluff and get on with it. He ain't coming anyway if he slow plays us at this point. We aren't competing with Arkansas and Michigan for coaches. God forbid, you might have to hire a coach who has bounced a check before back when he was young...or you might have to overpay a young guy like Turner Gill or Venables. So what, SMU needs talent, not just an offensive play caller and time is ticking.
I think it was BUS who said that things are just not adding up. This is exactly how you would think an SMU search would go. But Orsini was supposed to be different, right? That's what I mean...things are just not adding up.
Should we all flood Orsini's inbox with pleas for him to call Bowden, Barnett or Neuheisal? Perhaps it is Turner, in which case I would expect Orsini's days at SMU to be numbered. Very weird. I mean, who the hell are they even interviewing??? Geaux MUSTANGS! Geaux Tigers!
They are adding up exactly as you would think... if you have half a brain. Our first guy was in the winner circle until he had an ACC offer pop up - now we turn to the next best thing ....which will take a week or so...not that hard to figure out.
Come on - its the real world not the SMU world.

The truth of the matter is that the decision makers have dropped the ball. It is great to reach for the stars if you get there, but I think SMU reached too high. As I have said before coming close means nothing. For that matter, Phil Bennett came close to a lot of wins this year. He came close to leading SMU to a Bowl game last season. He came close to a winning record in 2005. The fact is he did not achieve any of the results he came close to. Just as PB was held accountable, our administration needs to be held accountable. At this point is the recruiting season even salvageable?
fine, but credibility means something on this forum. You just showed up. Where have you been the past 7 years? If you have been here through all of the other coaching changes, why did you change your name? Not willing to really go on record? you just found the internet? you just came to SMU as a first year student? c'mon and why will it take time if this thing is "in the bag" bro?
They are interviewing some top candidates. this much I have heard. Told no names. Though I have been told Orsini is in complete charge, it does seem like there has to be others who maybe pushing hard for Orsini to hire a weak candidate they may like and objecting we consider a strong candidate like Gary Barnett. Makes no since........... I mean if football people were in charge, why not interview a proven coach like Barnett who said in the press he was interested in SMU's job ?.... PJ certainly would have been great, but no question someone dropped the ball on that because obviously, he was not interested in coming here at all.....It is frustrating, but I'm still very impressed with what Orsini has done raising money and alot of other things. I think Orsini will make the right hire.
The only way someone is credible to me is by being on the record. You are clearly on the record for we messed this up and will not get a good hire. Once again and for the record, you can put me down: 1) It will take time 2) It will be worth the wait Time will tell who is credible.
I did not say we would not get a good hire, challenge you to find a quote where I said any such thing. I still expect a good hire. Never said otherwise. If you notice, I said there is more than one good hire. Barnett, Mason, Bowden, Gill and several others would be good hires. No reason we can't get one. What we have messed up is the PROCESS and had a negative effect on public relations and recruiting in the process. two very real things.
CandidatesI've been on the sidelines during these discussions. Time for my two cents before quietly going back to the box.
ALOT of Schools are same position - Michigan, Duke, Arkansas, & Colorado State come to mind. I haven't read much about close to hires on any of them yet. Time will tell but being first (particularly at this point of the year) isn't most important. Stallion can tell us how many kids commit in December, however I'm not sure it is many at this point of the month. If the hire is good, we will salvage a recruiting class for '08. A great hire and the wait will be more than worth it. The most popular candidates on this board are probably the least popular in the search - Barnett, Bowden, & Neuheisel (sorry if missed spelled Rick) are not being talked to by any school (see Duke story)...there is a reason - all have 'dirt' on them and schools are going to avoid them no matter how successful they were years ago. None of these 'candidate' have been openly interviewed by any college program. If SMU hires them, I'll be the first to come on and eat crow. Our history will dictate a 'clean' hire. Someone who may have had a history (perhaps mistakes but not a dirty program or personal history). Look at schools still playing (OC/DC) or the pros. Orsini took a good swing on his first pitch (Johnson) who came to Dallas however GT offered more. He is keeping it close to the vest and so far I'm thinking it is the right strategy. Now it is back to the sidelines.
Re: Candidates
this is might be untrue, at least, according to the AJC. they have made multiple refrences to the fact that PJ could've taken the "SMU job for more money"...
Re: Candidates
Don't forget we are not Michigan or Arkansas. Not even close. They look really foolish right now, but they will be fine in the end. They both also have the luxury of identifying an up-and-comer who will have the Michigan or Arkansas brand to go out and use to recruit. We do not have that luxury. We need a coach with a name in order to bring in the recruits.
Re: Candidates
how about.......GT had more to offer. (Bowl games, BCS, on field success, a fan following, etc.)
