Best candidate left...

Postby LonghornFan68 » Thu Dec 13, 2007 10:23 am

... is still Major Applewhite. I'd probably buy season tickets if he became the head coach. I think this squad needs someone who is young and has ambition. Besides, can SMU really go down from here? 0-fer and 1-11 is as bad as it gets. Take a chance on a guy who has the potential to be great. Look at the stepping stones Mack Brown took to get to Texas. Looks like Major could be following a similar path.

But what do I know? Not a whole helluva lot.

If you are dead broke you don't spend your last dollar on a lotto ticket for the potential to be rich.

Good try, but I don't think the two are analogous. Major Applewhite will be successful. It's just a matter of him getting into a situation that allows him to be so. I think if he remains at Alabama he'll be successful. He's still working with the dregs of a few bad recruiting years and players that wouldn't have walked on at most other SEC schools.

Funny, though that he helped two teams get into bowls in his first year as OC at those schools. I think the kid has something.

Well then why in holy hell would he even entertain coming to SMU?

Because I think he could be successful at SMU. Assuming of course, he is able to change the culture around campus. It would put him back in Texas where he is immensely popular and I think he could recruit well.

Thae necessarily means you think SMU is "a situation that allows" a coach to be successful. How long have you been watching again?

Not long. Since the 0-fer season. I'm only 29. I've only been watching college football for 10 years. But I'm a quick learner. It only took me getting burned 3 times to learn matches are hot. ;)

"He's still working with the dregs of a few bad recruiting years and players that wouldn't have walked on at most other SEC schools. "

WHAT?? From '04 - '06 Alabama had classes ranked 15th, 18th and 11th in the nation respectively. I'm pretty confident these players could play at just about any team in the SEC...

Where do these assumptions come from?

I would venture to guess that jt and mrydel have pony t-shirts 29 years old.

finishing between 11-18th Nationally in recruiting will get you to about 4th to 6th in the SEC. Those boys recruit down there-all of them.

You're right, I wasn't thinking. I had it in my head that since they were on probation a few years ago that it hurt recruiting. Chalk this on one up to me running my mouth without doing my homework.

Close. I found my 1981 SWC Champs t-shirt not long ago. Of course, we missed the Cotton Bowl that year because we were on probation, as usual....

just to back up my off the cuff statement about SEC recruiting-Last year 7 teams finished in the Top 10 Nationally in recruiting according to Rivals-no wonder Alabama was mediocre last year.
