JJ discussion on Houston radio this morning

Postby lawless » Wed Dec 26, 2007 12:43 pm

Was driving back from a holiday visit this morning, and heard Andre Ware scold his alma mater for moving so quickly on Sumlin, when Jones might have considered a move to the mainland and UH. Ware, for whatever it's worth, said he thought that Jones at SMU was quite feasible.

The pub is nice, however, I am not building my hopes up on June Jones. I see this situation playing out very much in the way Paul Johnson used SMU as leverage for a better offer from Georgia Tech. The only difference here is that Jones will be using SMU as leverage against his current employer. I truly hope I'm wrong b/c I think June Jones would be the best candidate of any of the realistic possibilities that have been thrown around on this board.

Excuse my ignorance, but does Hawaii have academic standards to contend with? Has JJ ever recruited to a situation similar to SMU? Seems like JJ has a unique situation at Hawaii. How do we know it will translate to Dallas?

I see his spread O working wonders in C-USA...the conference where defenses go to die!!

Heard Jim Donnan on Atlanta radio back in Nov, saying that PJ was our top choice and June Jones was 2nd, and that we were looking at $2MM/yr. Most ponyfans know this, but thought it was interesting Donnan said that...he has been pretty spot on.

SMU has said they are relaxing things. Case by case etc. If SMU were to land JJ. IF. SMU would find a way to get the right kids to the school. I think GWB has a criminal record. We gave him a second chance.

Obviously there are circumstances that are different here than at Hawaii but I still think JJ would be able to turn SMU into a consistent contender for the CUSA title with his prolific offense. Surely we would be able to sway a top caliber QB prospect to SMU w/ June Jones as our coach.

Hawaii lists at least 35 JUCO/College Transfers including the two best players Colt Brennan(Colorado) and Jevon Bess(Oregon St) With 78 Polynesians many of which never grew up in the United States you can expect many other borderline kids. It is amazing how many on this board marvel at the exploits of Coaches who recruit the lowest common denominator under NCAA Rules but then claim, despite 20 years of evidence, that those same players are not needed at SMU.

he hasn't but he would just outcoach everybody through superior x and o ability. we're gonna keep firing coaches until we can find a master x and o guy who can out-strategize everybody else on the chalkboard.

How many on this board would have wanted a convicted rapist admitted to SMU? Brennan has of course been a model parolee and has apparently turned his life around since getting to Hawaii. But that begs the question, because all of that is hindsight which is of course 20/20. Would SMU admit a convicted rapist and offer him a football scholarship?

I called in 104.5 the zone in Nashville this morning and asked Frank Wychek's morning show what they thought of SMU's interest on JJ. First they hasseled me for going to SMU by asking if they could borrow some money and if I would pass the Grey Poupon (guess the stereo-type made its way here). They had the anti-SMU attitude like why leave UH for SMU.. doesn't make sense.. why go try to rehab a program when you already have something great going.. couldn't replicate success at an academic school... etc... and I fired back with well if Wake, Stanford, Navy, Vandy can be competitive and win, there is no reason SMU can't... blah blah blah basically gave Orsini's punch list of why SMU should be successful (Dallas, facilities, etc)... and they said its a dead program and Eric Dickerson and CJ were the end of line.... told some anecdote about Doak.... finished by saying JJ has no reason to want to go there... and I said there are $10 million reasons why and thats when they hung up on me... i was furious. But, hey, they spent about 15 minutes talking about SMU on Nashville, TN radio!!!!!

Oh Wycheck and Donald Mitchell from SMU played for the Titans at the same time, and Wycheck claimed that DM used to say SMU had no hope!!!! Unbelievable!!

On January 28, 2004, Brennan entered the dorm room of a University of Colorado coed uninvited and, according to the coed "exposed himself and fondled her."[3] Brennan, who was intoxicated at the time of the incident, was arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to charges of burglary and trespassing, but a guilty verdict for unlawful sexual contact was vacated by the court for lack of evidence. [2] After the incident, which was caught up in the middle of the time when CU was flooded with other accusations of sex crimes and revelations of wild recruiting parties involving Colorado football players, Brennan was almost immediately kicked off the team

Stallion is correct about Hawaii....they will let in anybody. However, Jones can never get top rated players from the mainland. While their academic standards are on par with a Kansas State, Fresno State, or South Flordia, Jones has the added challenge of trying to get kids to come all the way to Hawaii and terrible facilities. He does a great job at finding guys who fits his system.
