Home Opener Sell Out

Postby hubberlang » Wed Jan 09, 2008 10:25 pm

Not sure how much attendance for 08 has been discussed in the last 48 hours, but here are my 2 cents.

I think the excitement surrounding Coach Jones alone is worth 20,000-25,000 people in their seats for the first home game, but what are we doing to fill those last 7-12,000 seats (similar to last year's number of empty seats at the Tech game)?

Do Bob and Greg have a plan to capitalize on this buzz with ticket sales? It seems like we have a ton of loyalists on this chat room that would be willing to do what it takes to show our appreciation to the Circle of Champions and Coach Jones.

It seems like the best way to do that is to come up with ideas on how to make next year's first game standing room only at kickoff (well, at least midway through the first quarter).

Any ideas?

Texas State travels well for a FCS school.

Texas State will have a ton of fans at that game. I'd say that an ad campaign featuring June Jones, Eric Dickerson and Craig James would help.

Texas State will travel very well just as we did to Baylor last year, in fact probably better because we have a huge alumni base in the Metroplex, and we will be some of the loudest visiting fans you have ever seen. It's not very often that visiting fans can screw up a home teams snap count but we did it twice to Baylor last year when they were in the Bobcat end of the stadium. It was a lot of fun. I would imagine we will also bring the entire band and Strutters as well, usually do for FBS games within the state.

Alumni base? Does anyone ever really graduate from Texas State?

j/k! Have more than a few friends who went there, but couldn't resist. It's a side effect of still being at work at 10:07pm.

How about if we just win the game and worry about sellouts later?

I was at the Baylor game but sat right next to the field so I never got a really good look but I know that the Baylor Rice game they had 29,000 with only a few hundred Rice people and they had 36,000 for us. Realistically I think there were around 4 thousand, maybe 45 hundred counting the band and Strutters. Could be a few more. I know it would have been a lot more had we not tanked the week before at home against a D-2. The advantage for both of us is this will be the opening game and the opening game of the season always has people excited about a new season so I think it is realistic to expect between 5 and 7 thousand Bobcat fans plus the band and Strutters to be there. Maybe more but I wouldn't expect much less.

There is no question that the opener should/must be a sellout. This is our "Welcome to SMU - We're Glad You're Here" game for June Jones. This is a legitimate beginning of a new regime and new era of Mustang Football. We need to pull out all the stops... At kick-off it needs to look like the SMU vs Kansas game. This is bigger than the Kansas game, anyway. Students, parents, friends, fans, alums, local businesses, Democrats and Republicans need to get behind the initiative to fill Ford - grassy knoll and all. I hope we can attain the earliest sellout possible and then have to scramble to add bleachers around the area in front of the scoreboard. I envision a very loud, hyped crowd. This is the time to throw out the laid-back, "country-club" atmosphere and become REAL college football fans... like standing up for the kickoff, yelling our support (instead of a polite round of applause), and standing and cheering our offensive, defensive, and kicking units as they come off the field - in addition to "intense" celebrations when we score or prevent one. I realize we have some very vocal and enthusiastic fans right now, but they are in the minority - we have some who are "afraid of what others will think" and take the "sophisticated" approach. Baloney. It's time to turn it loose. We all need to start early on the Boulevard and then head to Ford so that the place is overflowing when the "new and improved" Mustangs take the field. (would someone please destroy that inflatable helmet in the meantime) June Jones will have the team ready, we all need to Pony Up! and take care of the other "stuff".

I am much more concerned about our attendance for the 2nd game, 3rd game, etc. We need to grow the curve rather than have it diminish throughout the year.

I predict 28,000. Make it 28,002 if Fran and Phil are still unemployed.

I just we win the game. It would be a real let down if we start the June Jones era the same way the Phil Bennett era started. We need to pound Texas State and look impressive doing so!
