The good newsThat was embarrassing but it isn't the end of the year. We have a very young team that just got a lesson in Div 1 football.
We have a long week to prepare for Texas State (thank goodness). No major injuries. Plenty of time to review film and learn. Mitchell learned the level of athlete is a tad better than high school. Jones and his staff have a better feel for this team and its abilities. Now they can make adjustments. The measure of this team will be how they prepare and preform in the next contest. The team, staff and we fans have a lot to learn and patience will be a virtue.
Ron Meyer was 3-8 his first year. That included a loss at Rice and a loss at Memphis to then Memphis State. The offense will come around and improve. The defense has a long way to go. Hopefully, we will improve just a tad on defense.
I'm happy that we scored that many points personally. Most of these kids are freshmen and this was their first game. If people expected instant wins, they are unrealistic. You have to give JJ some time and these kids some time to develop. This team doesn't need to see the fans totally lose faith. Look at the positives and let JJ do his job that he is getting paid millions to do.
Soup,
I'm fine. I had very little in the way of expectations for this game and the season. I figured SMU would lose tonight by 17-21 points. In fact, I think my prediction was 40-21. I thought the best SMU could do this year was 4-8. I must admit though, even with minimal expectations for the game and season, I walked out of the game tonight in disbelief. Physically, SMU was whipped and outclassed - when Rice is doing that to you, man, you have got a long, long, long way to go. The D is small, slow and can't tackle and the OL was pitiful. Again, I wasn't expecting a win or even a close loss but I was expecting to be entertained and to see a little promise. I wasn't entertained and I saw very little to be excited about. I saw very little in the way of D-IA caliber players out on the field tonight. Most on here crush Stallion but the guy knows what he is talking about. College football is about players. The team with the better players wins the great majority of the time. If Jones is gonna earn that $2M a year, he is gonna have to do it on the recruiting trail because SMU is woefully short on talent.
Agreed. Thankfully, Jones is on his way to a great recruiting class for 2009.
Is it? Really? I don't know that i would go as far as saying the 09 class is anywhere close to Great. We need to get some good JUCO talent this year especially on Defense. Stallion is correct in saying we are going to have to somehow start winning some of these recruiting battles with TCU, Tech, Ok. State, etc. Finding a few diamonds in the rough is okay but we need a serious talent boost.
The good news
If 75% leave the board, They were not PONY FANS. I support this team and jj win or loss. I want this team to win. God knows under Bennett it was "Heart-Break Hotel". But put that in the past. I may have to put something strong in my kool-aid at times this season. But By Golly, I am not giving up on these guys.
Smooboy, that was a good point. We had a number of dropped interceptions. Making those would have really made a difference.
The good news is that JJ has set the plate to show great coaching. The world knows how bad we are. Now if we in fact get better JJ will be seen as a good coach. If we really get better he will be seen as a great coach.
And the unis looked good. Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!! @PonyGrad
