How to turn this thing around

Postby Pony81 » Tue Sep 23, 2008 9:52 pm

Despite offering a top education, being in a recruting hotbed, having a beautiful campus with TOP FACILITIES, I think JJ must get what he can locally but spend most of his time recruiting nationally.

Texas is too picked over by all the top programs for SMU to be successful in the shape we are in. Recruits see us as a sad sack program with a kick me sign on our back.

We have to go national like Doherty where people don't know SMU and we can sell the education, facilities and pretty girls to get better athletes.

JJ has a national name and can pull it off.

get a bunch of JUCOs for a year or two so your own recruits can grow and mature, then they can play as juniors and seniors. Again, it is not rocket science 18 yr. olds vs. 22/23 yr. olds is not going to cut it.

as far as TCU, couple of their kids were here this summer at Priest Holmes camp talking about how easy school was and their classes were handled for them. Until we admit the same type of kids and have the same type of majors to make it easier for the kids to just concentrate on football we are going to be behind as well.

Don't laugh. Some of us who have been season ticket holders and Mustang Club members since 1990, been with the team to the Cotton Bowl and back, etc. would probably consider the trade off for a winning season and a bowl.

We could use the OU model (ie Bohmar) - after all, one of the members of the Circle of Champions owns a very successful group of car dealerships. ((I am kidding))

There is an interesting article on the front page of Rivals this morning about how long it has been since any major investigations by the NCAA into a top school in basketball. It revisited Tarkanian's old line of " The NCAA was so mad at Kentucky they gave Cleveland State 2 more years of probation."

The NCAA is basically out of the severe probation game and has basically written a script how to avoid it.

Accepting credit hours from juco and other division 1 schools to allow the coaches to supplement the roster with these type players is a big start in getting competitive again. SMU cannot recruit against Big 12 schools. There are still enough good / great players left over to field a competitive team but you have to supplement the roster with juco and transfers to create depth. TCU, Tulsa, UTEP have done it and it has resulted in more depth and wins. SMU has not done it and it has resulted in playing too many freshman and redshirt freshman and losses. SMU also gets an F in player retention in that SMU is constantly fielding one of the youngest teams in the country which results in losses. Remember, even JJ said this, SMU has not been bad by accident. There is a reason SMU cannot field a winning football team. Hopefully, by hiring a proven winning coaching staff and lowering the restrictions placed on admitting juco and transfers (by accepting all credit hours), the talent upgrade will happen at SMU. If it doesn't happen then god help the few loyal fans left.

The problem of course is that the rest of CUSA, TCU, A&M, or UT would turn us in to the NCAA for a hangnail. We'd retaliate by turning them in, and the NCAA would then give us Death Penalty II, TCU Death Penalty I, and say they've cleaned up College football and whack everyone else with a wet noodle. Jones can get it done by recruiting nationally. For example the UMC has 8 Million members. I assume that 5% of them are under the age of 18. If even 5% of them played football, that's a 45,000 pool right there. Why not send our coaches, players, etc. to UMC churches to "testify"! Jones has a pretty good near death story to tell. Notre Dame, Georgetown send their folks to CYA meetings all the time. Not contrary to NCAA rules because they are religious meetings. What are some other ways JJ could recruit nationally. What pools of players could he tap into? Former NFL players who played for him have kids or grandkids.

As a Methodist I can say there were hardly any Methodists at SMU. Seemed like most everybody was Catholic to me.
