There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State!HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Sam Houston State University fired head football coach Todd Whitten after five years on the job.
NCAA sources told FOX 26 Sports that Bearkats athletics director Bobby Williams told Whitten of his dismissal in a meeting on Monday morning. In five years at Sam Houston State, Whitten compiled an overall record of 25-28. In 2009, the Bearkats were 5-6 overall and finished fifth in the Southland Conference with a 3-4 record. Whitten took over at Sam Houston State replacing Ron Randleman who retired following the 2004 season after 23 years on the job. Randleman left the Bearkats as the winningest coach in school history. Before joining Sam Houston State, Whitten was head coach at Tarleton State University where he was 45-23 in six years and was named Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year after the 1996 season.
Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State! So who will be BLM's coach next year?

Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State!BLM will remain at S.M.U. Bank on it. He wants that degree from The Hilltop. ![]()

Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State! Some of the names being tossed around on the SHSU fan board.
Brad Franchione, Blinn JC HC Chris Thomsen, Abilene Christian HC Guy Morriss, Texas A&M-Commerce HC Don Carthel, West Texas A&M HC Brian Norwood, Baylor DC Jason Phillips, Houston Co-OC/WR Coach Tommy Spangler, La Tech DC Scott Stoker, SHSU DC Dave Elson, former Western Kentucky HC R.C. Slocum, former Texas A&M HC Mike Hudson, Montana DC Hal Mumme, McMurry HC Joe Tumpkin, Pitt LB Coach I suspect PB's pretty satisfied with his job at Pitt. Don't you?
Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State!Carthel must be north of 80, and Huntsville is a loooong way from his ranch in west Texas. Scratch him off the list. Isnt Slocum being paid to do nothing at A&M?
Good to see Mumme landed somewhere after NMSU. Tumpkin came to SMU to be with PB after SHSU; don't think he's ever been higher than a LB coach. Spangler would be unwise to jump ship before going with Derek Dooley to whatever big school hires him the minute he has a little bit of success. If it's from this list, my bet would be on Franchione or Morriss.
Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State!SFA passed on Franchionne and has turned things around pretty nicely. However, Brad has done very at Blinn and Sam is pretty Aggie.
And to think that Whitten had Rhett Bomar for about half his tenure.
Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State!
Carthel is in his fifties. He wasn't even 40 when he "retired" from Eastern New Mexico. I don't think he would move out of West Texas, though.
Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State!
you're right. He's 57. I just remember a grey haired guy at Eastern.
Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State!
You might be thinking of Bud Elliott.
Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State! Not only did he have Bomar but he also had a former aTm QB (Dustin Long) and a former UofH QB (Blake Joseph) who both transferred to SHSU for 'more playing time' and 'the opportunity to take the program to the playoffs'. Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State!
I bet most 1-AA schools have more high school 4 *'s on their rosters than most non BCS school with all the transfers
Re: There's a HC Job Opening at Sam Houston State!Former SMU offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey is on a list of 12 candidates for the head coaching job at Sam Houston State.
