DeLoss Dodds wants Big 12 to remain intact?

Postby PonyPride » Fri Jun 11, 2010 10:07 am

Just saw a comment from Dodds on the ESPN crawl that said that after meeting with other Big 12 schools (not sure if it was all of them, or just those threatening to break off), he "wants the Big 12 to stay together."

Anyone else see this, and able to offer a little more context?

if Nebraska doesn't announce this morning, there will be a greater than zero chance that the Big 12 gets salvaged somehow over the weekend. Not sure who they would invite, could be BYU, could be TCU. Boy, wouldn't that be our worst nightmare. I know Arkansas loves the money of the SEC but could they be much more competitive in the Big12? As of this moment, Colorado wasn't that huge of a loss for Deloss.

Same thing that's been said since day 1. Meaningless.

Isn't it a foregone conclusion that Nebraska is leaving? Doesn't Osborne hate Texas and the B12 South cartel? I'm pretty sure he wants them in the Big Ten

all that really means is Nebraska has much more negotiating leverage at this moment than a few months ago. Maybe an 11th hour deal is struck to give NU the same economics Texas has to anchor the north division. Dynamics change and weird things happen at the 11th hour. Nothing is done until the press conference begins. Don't you think Baylor, Mizzou and a few others are much more willing to give up some dollars of revenue share right now? Theyve seen a ghost.

unless they cede North Texas to Nebraska they will never have the same economics as Texas.

DALLAS, Tex -- A highly-placed source tells KCTV5 that the head of a television network has again told Big 12 officials they would like to form a Big 12-Pac-10 Network and that the conference's next television deal is lucrative enough to keep remaining Big 12 teams together.

Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe is using the potential contract to try and urge the remaining universities in the conference to stay together.

Oklahoma Athletic Director Joe Castiglione told the Oklahoma City Daily Oklahoman, "We have a very, very strong sense from our television partners that the revenue stream would be very, very good going forward. Better than where we are today.”

The current Big 12 television contract is a seven-year contract through 2016 with ABC that pays them $480 million, and the Fox Sports Network contract pays them $78 million and ends in 2012.

In 2008, the SEC signed a 12-year, $2.25 billion deal with ESPN/ABC and has a 15-year, $825 million agreement with CBS. Each SEC's school reportedly receives around $15-17 million per year from the television contracts.

Th Big Ten has a 10-year, $1 billion deal with ESPN/ABC and a 25-year, $2.8 billion deal with the Big Ten Network. Fox Sports owns a 49 percent stake in the Big Ten network and would likely want a similar deal with the Big 12 and Pac-10, KCTV5's sources said.

All eyes on Lincoln. But it could also be that UT has suddenly realized that its marketability is not as vast as it thought. Perhaps the PAC-10 stiff armed them on some money issues or A&M's dalliance with the SEC gave them a reality check that it would be crazy for them to go west and the Aggies to the east. They can squeeze a few more concessions out of the soon to be left outs in the Big XII, perhaps saying that any entrance fees for new members would go predominantly to them. They back fill with BYU and/or Utah and destroy the MWC in the process. That would filet TCU's BCS dreams. I suspect that they don't want TCU, SMU, Rice or UH in any autobid conference anytime in the near future.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

This is starting to make sense. Why not just join the Pac 10 and Big 12 with TV contracts? don't need championship game or elimate members, keep the status quo and join forces to negotiate with TV. I can't see Nebraska staying, but I can see the Big 12 surviving.
