It's nearly impossible to kick FGs vs SMU

Postby horseshoe hilltop » Sun Oct 03, 2010 1:03 am

In five games, SMU's opponents have attempted six field goals. Of those six: three have been blocked, two others missed, and only one made. And since one of those was run back for a touchdown, that means when our opponent lines up for a FG attempt, they are getting outscored.

Credit June and McKnight for placing such importance on special teams.

I guess that is one of the few positive aspects of our ST right now.

Actually, we only have one real weakness on our ST, and it's dropping punts.

Our kick-block team has performed spectacularly.

Our kicker, who hopefully isn't hurt, has the longest FG in the nation, an eye-popping 61 yarder.

That same punter is 31st in the country in net punting, with a solid 41.5 yard average. (He is only 4th in the conference, apparently punting is something C-USA does well).

Darryl Fields is 10th in the country in return yards, averaging 26.4.

Look for yourself.

If we can stop dropping punts and don't give up a long KO return, I would say they have been an absolute weapon.

Wasn't one of this year's recruits a kid from Oregon whose specialty it was to return punts; I can't remember the name. Has anyone returned any punts this year other than D.J. ?

covering kick offs is job one and we have been poor at that. When we get that done I will feel much better about ST

I was looking back at old blog postings. In 2005, we had a kick blocked in each of the first five games. Things have certainly changed.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Brought a buddy of mine to the TCU game and he said that he had never seen a college football team so obsessed with blocking kicks (even PATs). I told him that it really helped make our season last year because we won a couple of those games due to points we scored off of blocked kicks.

It's good to see that it's becoming a team effort, and not just Margus getting his shots.

Wrong. Our kick offs are very weak as Sada kicks off very low trajectory kicks and most are barely inside the 20. This raises havoc on the special teams coverage and gives the other team great field position. Glaring weakness.

Exactly!..Has he ever kicked one into the end zone?...the kicks are almost always low and fast and don't give our KO team time to get down field at all for coverage, and are at the 15 yard line most times.....we need help there. Sada is only a walkon from Monterey, Mexico I know, but we need a healthy kicker, NOW!

Robert Mojica is also returning punts. Hasn't broken a big one yet though. I believe he's fair-caught them all.
